POSITION SUMMARY: 

Performs routine and non-routine analysis of a chemical and physical nature on finished, raw and processed ingredients as well as Finished Stock samples.  Performs microbiological analyses on raw, processed, and finished ingredients; components and Finished Stock.  Utilizes prescribed methodology and technique in two of three laboratory areas (RI, FI or Micro), at minimum.  May function in the control of raw ingredients or finished stock via performance of sampling, inspections and recording. 3rd Shift Technicians ONLY 

Essential Functions:

  • Approves and releases raw ingredients, processed ingredients, finished ingredients and Finished Stock according to established procedures.
  • Communicates to the appropriate department the status of raw, finished, processed ingredient and microbiological analyses.        
  • Communicates test results out of specification.
  • Standardizes and calibrates laboratory equipment and analytical instruments according to the cGMP requirements.  Maintains a complete and cGMP-compliant notebook.        
  • Prepares reagents and tests media as directed.
  • Perform finished stock evaluations (when applicable, i.e., Line Start-ups, Line Prep release, Branch inspections).
  • Performs general laboratory duties such as glassware maintenance, chemical inventories maintenance, receiving, and logging standard samples and chemicals.  Ability to store samples retains, in non-lab areas such as the basement or warehouse. Maintains all related notebooks, records, logs and files related to the above functions.
  • Reviews and verifies drug calculation and laboratory notebooks for accuracy.
  • Participates in the routine auditing of facility records for cGMP compliance.
  • Able to understand facility systems as it relates to the control and release of quarantined materials such as FSC, Finished ingredients and raw materials.
  •  Follow safety policies and maintain good housekeeping in work area.
  • Perform analytical and identification determinations using various lab instrumentation such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography, Gas Chromatography (thermal and flame), Infrared Spectrophotometer, UV/Vis Spectrophotometer, X-Ray and Karl Fisher.
  • Makes adjustments to finished ingredient batches that are not within specifications.  
  • Monitors processing steps in the manufacture of first manufactured batches and selected problem products in conjunction with lab management personnel.
  • Must shade match and problem solve make-up products. 
  • Maintains standard samples of raw ingredients, perfume oils and finished ingredients.
  • Handles collection and disposal of hazardous waste and waste solvents generated by the lab and HPLC equipment in accordance with safety and environmental regulatory requirements.
  • Perform sampling of incoming ingredients or materials (when applicable).
  • Maintains all related notebooks, records, logs and files related to the above functions.

  • Performs tests to determine the microbiological qualities of Processing and Packaging machines (e.g. swabbing, sterility tests).
  • Conducts environmental sampling and testing of ambient air, compressed air, and process water.
  • Prepare media to support all testing within the micro lab.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Education/Experience:

  • Strong analytical skills, mathematical skills, deductive and analytical reasoning.
  • Basic computer skills such as Word, Excel, and Access.
  • Ability to become competent in operational systems such as Lab, MRP and Warehouse.
  • Working knowledge of microbiological and/or chemical principles and analytical procedures.
  • Knowledgeable in cGMP requirements as it relates to a topical OTC manufacturing laboratory.
  • Minimum 4-year degree in college chemistry, biology or related field, including instrumental analysis or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle pressure and demonstrate flexibility. 
  • Able to demonstrate good interpersonal skills and take initiative on specific issues.
  • Ability to prioritize handling of situations.  
  • Must have a positive attitude.

Responsibility:

  • Responsible for all analytical and microbial testing on raws, processed, finished ingredients, finished stock, retains.
  • Calibrations of instruments and standardization of solutions.
  • Ability to test in an organized approach (grouping like test) to maximize testing efficiency.
  • Ability to interpret test data and report suspect findings to the Chemist/Supervisor
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision, including overtime.
  • Accurate recording of all Laboratory results.
  • Must wear all Laboratory required PPE.
  • Exercises professionalism in dealing with all situations.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of Company information.

Reasoning/Problem Solving Ability:

  • Able to use common sense in conjunction with abstract thinking to solve complex problems.  Able to generate multiple possible solutions to problems. Requires little supervision when problem solving.

Language Skills:

  • Able to read and interpret documents such as specifications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals without supervisor explanation.
  • Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from Management, Associates, etc.

Quantitative Skills:

  • Must be able to achieve the specified rating on the Munsell –Farnsworth Color Hue Test.
  • Must be able to pass the fragrance odor panel test.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to perform complex calculations.
  • Ability to read and understand complex procedures, assemble appropriate equipment, perform analyses and calculate results.

Physical Demands:  

  • Continuous standing at a bench
  • Handles multiple chemical tests
  • Occasional heavy lifting of boxes (20 –40 pounds)
  • Handles (tip and roll) 150 lb compressed gas chemicals.  
  • Bending, reaching overhead to obtain and put away laboratory supplies
  • Works in a basement/warehouse storage area to file records and retrieve samples
  • Fine manipulation of laboratory instruments within the laboratory.
  • Will routinely taste products and evaluate texture on the lips and skin.
  • Routine odor evaluation.

Work Environment:  

  • Exposed to explosive, flammable, and toxic chemicals in the laboratory
  • Exposed to caustics, acids and bases.
  • Laboratory – Unpleasant odors, handling of corrosive toxic and flammable materials.
  • Processing/Warehouse – Exposure to all warehouse physical conditions (heat, cold, and dirt).

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be able to work overtime as needed.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours depending on business need.
