What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shelter Advocate position at Family Refuge Center?
The schedule for this position will primarily be Sunday night shift (6p-6a) and two 14-hour shifts (6a-8p) throughout the week.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities
1. Conduct intake and exit interviews with clients; provide crisis intervention, counseling, and advocacy to victims through the 24-hour hotline.
2. Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the shelter facility.
3. Conduct shelter support groups and educational workshops.
4. Assist shelter residents with applying for benefits through WV DHHR, housing, legal assistance, relocation expenses, job services, medical care, etc.
5. Provide client transportation.
6. Pick up, sort, and distribute donations.
7. Assist and train staff on the database.
8. Serve as a backup court advocate, when needed.
9. Assist victims with completing and filing paperwork, including protection orders or personal safety orders.
10. Assists in completing and filing for Crime Victims Compensation.
11. Assists sexual assault and domestic violence victims by encouraging documentation of abuse, prosecution, and promoting safety planning.
12. Provides a full range of case management services to sheltered victims, including crisis counseling and referrals to community organizations.
13. Network with other agencies to serve clients comprehensively.
14. Collect and enter statistical data into the database in a timely manner. Use the data to complete monthly and annual reporting as outline in the grant documents.
15. Collect, enter, and maintain statistical information about services and referrals.
16. Keeps informed and knowledgeable about FRC’s programs, attends training opportunities, meetings, and professional organizations, etc.
17. Serves as an effective representative for FRC and its programs.
18. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- College degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology or equivalent preferred. High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of agency training program
- Demonstrated interpersonal and human relation skills, group dynamics, knowledge of community resources
- Ability to manage time, work independently and handle several projects at once
- Prove excellent communication skills (oral and written), organizational skills, record keeping skills
- Ability to work a flexible schedule
- Discretion and confidentiality required.
- Reliable car, valid driver’s license, and automobile insurance.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
