Position Overview

The Peer Recovery Specialist (PRS) for the Bayou location is a person in recovery from a behavioral health condition who will provide support to clients in or seeking recovery. The Peer Recovery Specialist will share their lived experience, assess, motivate, advocate, and provide resources to clients as a means for the client to stay in or obtain recovery.

Essential Functions

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Provide recovery support and coaching to individuals on their recovery journey.
  • Provide identified services to clients per their treatment plan including life skills training, engaging in social support in the community, and coach basic health and safety skills.
  • Provide collaboration and advocacy for positive client outcomes.
  • Develop and maintain positive, caring, collaborative and healthy relationships with clients
  • Advocating for individuals in recovery
  • Shares lived experience of recovery
  • Facilitate groups to support recovery related goals
  • Provide transportation for clients as needed, to ensure compliance with treatment recommendations
  • Links the individual to their community, navigating resources and supportive recovery
  • Promotes leadership and advocacy, self-growth and development.
  • Maintain all required training and certifications identified by FHC and Peer certification requirements
  • Document accurately and within policy, in the individuals Electronic Medical Record
  • Achieves productivity standards set for this job role.
  • Follow all ethical guidelines as set by the Division of Mental Health and Addictions and ICAADA Certified Peer Recovery Coach Code of Ethics
  • Other duties as assigned

Work-Related Experience

  • Must have personal, lived experience in their own recovery from addiction or co-occurring substance and mental disorders with at least 1 year of verifiable sobriety, three years preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in primary care, mental health, or integrated healthcare setting preferred.
  • Computer skills to utilize provided training and employers Electronic Medical Record preferred
  • Familiarity with crisis intervention or trauma-informed care preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Mental:
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress situations, such as medical emergencies or crisis interventions.
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills in dynamic patient care settings.
  • Emotional resilience when working with patients experiencing crisis, trauma, or chronic illnesses.
  • Ability to provide compassionate care while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
Physical:
  • Frequent standing, walking, and occasional lifting of patients or equipment (up to 25 lbs).
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions, including typing for EHR documentation.
  • Frequent standing, walking, and reaching to provide patient care.
  • Occasional exposure to bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and hazardous materials; adherence to infection control protocols is required.
  • Prolonged sitting at a desk with frequent computer use.
Working Conditions:
  • Clinical environment with exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous materials, and emotionally challenging patient cases.
  • Potential for irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, or on-call responsibilities, depending on the role.
  • In the community, community agencies and vehicles.

Education, Certification, and Licensure

Education:
High School Diploma or GED
Certification:
Certified Peer Recovery Coach (CPRC) preferred or its equivalent
OR willing to become certified within 6 months of employment start
Licensure:
Must be 23 years or older with a valid driver’s license
