Job Overview

The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for assisting the Ophthalmologist by gathering data pertaining to the patient's visual status and maintain an environment conducive to the delivery of efficient, quality patient care.  The Ophthalmic Technician is able to effectively perform appropriate clinical testings such as, but not limiting to: Visual Acuity Testing, Visual Field Testing, lensometry, Automated Refractometry, Pupil Assessment, Gross External Examination, eye drop instillation.  Pachymetry, Keratometry, Manifest Refractometry, OCT, HRT, Corneal Topography, slit lamp photography, fundus photography and Ocular motility testing.

 

Professional responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Ability to accurately measure visual acuity using Snellen and allen charts. (be aware of descending order of visual acuity testing)
  • Refractometry; using both the AO refractor and trial lenses, if needed
  • Retinoscopy; being able to determine with accuracy, the refractive error of any patient of any age with the use of a retinoscope.
  • Lensometry; accurately measure the lens power of a given pair of glasses and recognizing and measuring prism, PD, Base Curve and optical centers.
  • Motility; able to measure and neutralize with prism and ocular deviation (ET, XT, HT, etc)
  • EOM’s (extraocular muscles); Able to recognize the under or over actions of a particular EOM.
  • Pupils; have the ability to accurately measure pupil diameter, reactivity (both direct and consensual), and be able to determine the appearance of an APD (afferent pupillary defect).
  • Pachymetry; ability to measure, with accuracy, using the instruments available, central corneal thickness.
  • Tonometry; measuring and recording intraocular pressure using the instruments available (Goldmann applanation tonometer, Tonopen).
  • Color vision testing; Ishiahara, Farnsworth 15D
  • Visual Field Testing; accurately record a patient’s visual field using the goldmann perimeter, the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer, and Confrontation methods.
  • GDX; ability to set up and perform a GDX.
  • Keratometry; accurately measure the radios of curvature of the cornea using the instruments available (Schirmers, Brightness Acuity Testing)
  • Ascan; IOL Master
  • Maintain exam rooms with appropriate supplies
  • Epic Usage

Required:

  • 3 or more years clinical ophthalmologic/optometry experience 
  • Ophthalmology Technician Certification and/or equivalent experience 

Preferred:

  • Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) or Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT)

Qualifications:

$33.24-$46.92 / Hourly

Salary : $33 - $47
