The Fairfax County Sheriff's Office is seeking dedicated professionals to support the daily operations of the agency under sworn supervision as a Control Booth Operator. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the security and efficiency of the Fairfax County Courthouse and Adult Detention Center (ADC), including coordinating and facilitating response of first responders to emergency situations. Responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring personnel, visitors, and inmates; 
  • Managing courtroom and security passage access and responding to calls via telephone and radio; 
  • Effectively communicating security incidents and sharing information with sworn personnel; 
  • Being proficient and current with policies and standard operating procedures; 
  • Possessing the ability to operate a computer-aided dispatch console, controls, and radio frequencies.

Note: This posting may fill multiple positions within the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. Assignments may vary based on operational needs, requiring adherence to established protocols and procedures.

Schedule: The incumbent may be assigned to multiple types of shifts (shift hours are subject to change).  Court hours are 8-hour shifts that work Monday-Friday, equal to 80 hours per two-week pay period; Squad schedules are 12.5-hour shifts that work 15 days per month with workdays alternating weekly, equal to 87.5 hours per two-week pay period, to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. (Day shift is from 6:30 am - 7:00 pm and Night shift is from 6:30 pm to 7:00 am).(The illustrative duties listed in this specification are representative of the class but are not an all-inclusive list.   • Monitor facility security systems, cameras and alarms to maintain secure environment;
  • Control and verify all access to secure areas through Inet system and ID verification protocols;
  • Coordinate communications between staff, public safety agencies and emergency services via radio and other channels;
  • Access and query criminal databases (VCIN/NCIC) as needed;
  • Inspect and report on security equipment functionality;
  • Provide professional customer service and approved information to public inquiries;
  • Document and relay critical information to appropriate personnel;
  • Manage inventory and storage of controlled items;
  • Enforce security protocols to prevent unauthorized access or escapes.

  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the functional area to which assigned;
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and County laws and ordinances affecting assigned duties;
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures and guidelines as well as riot, hostage, fire and disaster plans;
  • Knowledge of the agency's information technology system (e.g. PC's);
  • Ability to quickly assess the scope and magnitude of an emergency;
  • Ability to operate, emergency equipment, radio and CAD;
  • Ability to maintain a level of physical fitness appropriate to assignment;
  • Ability to work a shift work schedule which includes evenings, weekends, and holidays;
  • Ability to work effectively under stress;
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with fellow staff members, inmates, and other departments and agencies;
  • Ability to effectively handle situations requiring tact, diplomacy, fairness and good judgment;
  • Ability to make accurate observations and remember names, faces and details;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school graduation or possession of a G.E.D. issued by a state department of education.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) Operator Level B certification (Required within 6 months)

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check, polygraph exam, and psychological exam to the satisfaction of the employer.

This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies.)   

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Proficiency and experience operating a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
  • Proficiency and experience operating a radio dispatch communication console.
  • Previous experience dispatching public safety professionals to calls for service (i.e. law enforcement and/or fire & rescue).
  • Proficiency and experience using criminal justice information databases. (i.e. the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN))
  • Experience in corrections.
  • Proficiency and experience operating a secure facility control and monitoring system.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, visual acuity is required to read data on computer monitor and Graphic User Interface, incumbent must be able to operate mouse and keyboard driven equipment. Must verbally communicate effectively and with others. This position requires the ability to hear and interpret auditory signals, such as alarms, emergency alerts, or verbal instructions in real time, to ensure the safety of personnel and operations.
