The Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing, tracking, and reporting on manufacturing and operational costs to support strategic decision-making. This role will utilize Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (D365 F&O) to maintain cost structures, manage standard costing, and deliver actionable financial insights across the organization.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES
The primary Responsibilities and Duties of this position are:
- Develop, maintain and analyze standard costs for materials, labor and overhead
- Perform variance analysis (purchase price, labor, freight, duty, labor and overhead) and communicate finding to operations and finance leadership
- Support month-end close by preparing cost-related journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations
- Monitor and analyze inventory valuation, WIP and COGS
- Maintain cost accounting configurations within D365 including cost categories, costing versions, and BOM/routing setups
- Leverage D365 modules including production control, inventory management and cost management
- Generate and interpret cost reports using D365 built-in analytics and integrations
- Collaborate with IT and functional consultants on system enhancements, upgrades, and testing related to cost modules
- Assist in the preparation of annual budgets and quarterly forecasts
- Provide cost modeling support for new products
- Ensure compliance with GAAP cost accounting standards and internal control policies
- Support audits by providing cost schedules, reconciliations, and documentation
- Identify and implement process improvements to strengthen cost controls
- Partner with operations, supply chain and procurement teams to ensure accurate cost capture and reporting
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
- 2 years of cost accounting experience, preferably in a manufacturing or distribution environment
- Strong understanding of standard costing, variance analysis, and inventory accounting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Experience with D365 F&O preferred
- High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Ability to translate complex cost data into clear, actionable insights
- Self-starter with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
- Mindset for continuous improvement
