School Psychologist
Position Title: School Psychologist (Full-Time)
Department/School: Exceptional Children Department (EC)
Reports To: Director of Exceptional Children
Salary: Psychologist Salary Schedule
Contract Term: 10 months
Position Purpose
School psychologists help students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. They collaborate, problem-solve, intervene, and evaluate to support the whole child within a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS). School psychologists support the use of evidence- and research-based interventions to overcome barriers to student success and analyze data to promote growth. They partner with multidisciplinary educators, administrators, families, and community-based mental health professionals to create safe, supportive learning environments and strengthen connections between home and school.
Minimum Qualifications
- Degree from an accredited institution in School Psychology
- Ability to operate various equipment including computers, copiers, and fax machines
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle
- Ability to exert up to 20 pounds occasionally and/or negligible amounts consistently (e.g., test kits)
- Ability to walk or stand for significant periods of time
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of the National Associate of School Psychologist Model for Comprehensive and Integrated School Psychological Services and NC Professional School Psychology Standards
- Understanding of state and federal policies and regulations related to special education
- Knowledge of the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) framework (screening, progress monitoring, problem-solving, evaluation)
- Strong knowledge of child development, curriculum, instruction, and school environments
- Awareness of current literature, methods, and trends in school psychological services
- Effective consultation, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to reflect on practice and engage in continuous improvement
- Ability to maintain accurate, confidential student records
- Ability to meet established state, district, and departmental timelines
- Ability to build strong working relationships with staff, students, families, and outside agencies
- Proficiency in technology applications (word processing, email, presentations, collaboration tools, data collection software)
Education, Training, and Experience
- Must hold or be eligible for a North Carolina professional educator’s license in School Psychology
Certification and License Requirements
- Must possess valid certification (026) as a School Psychologist by the State of North Carolina
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Collaborate with district and school leadership to implement MTSS and ensure high-quality instruction aligned to student needs
- Provide services including universal screenings, data-based decision-making, academic/behavioral programming, progress monitoring, and data interpretation
- Consult with staff, families, and community agencies regarding student cognitive, academic, social, and behavioral performance
- Support Exceptional Children staff with referrals and reevaluation processes
- Administer assessments to determine student strengths, needs, and suspected disabilities
- Develop comprehensive psychoeducational reports to guide instruction and programming
- Assist with Functional Behavior Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans
- Support crisis intervention efforts including suicide screenings and threat assessments
- Provide professional development to school staff and other stakeholders
- Participate in professional learning and growth aligned to district/school improvement plans
