Providing day-to-day leadership and direction of assigned programs and services, incumbent is accountable for the performance and results of a team. Adapt departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Directs the development, management and implementation of all aspects of the university’s environmental regulatory compliance, occupational safety programs and services, workers’ compensation insurance program, and insurance liability claims to ensure university remains in compliance with applicable regulations and university policies.
- Support the response to hazardous material spills and emergencies including after hours, holidays and weekends.
- Engage, involve, and communicate with academic departments and operational unit leadership, and local authorities to ensure financial and operational effectiveness of university environmental health and safety policies and programs.
- Directs the development and implementation of inspections, audits, corrective and preventative action systems to assess and remedy the conformance of operations with environmental compliance, occupational safety, workers’ compensation insurance regulatory requirements, local regulations, standard industry practices, university policies and procedures and UT System directives.
- Oversees investigations and implementation of recommended corrective and preventative actions to eliminate or minimize hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions and conditions of non-compliance.
- Advises university faculty, staff, students and vendors on issues related to workers’ compensation insurance, environmental compliance, occupational safety management and environmental control issues relevant to their operations.
- Review documentation and complete required reports to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Interface with maintain effective relationships with external regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with applicable University and UT System policies.
- Directs development and implementation of effective training programs related to environmental health and safety issues to influence behavior and practices towards desired outcomes.
- Manages unit personnel and financial accounts, support budget development for assigned program areas to ensure conformance with the UTA’s policies and procedures.
- Manage effective relationships with external and internal stakeholders.
- Represent Environmental Health & Safety on assigned institutional committees and UT system committees (e.g., Occupational Safety Advisory Group, Environmental Advisory Group) as necessary.
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in natural science, engineering, industrial hygiene, or other appropriate discipline.
- Five (5) years of experience in the oversight and management of a comprehensive environmental health and safety program or an equivalent mix of education and relevant experience in similar role.
- Master’s degree in natural science, engineering, industrial hygiene, or other appropriate disciplines.
- Significant experience in environmental management and/or laboratory safety in a higher education or research environment.
- Professional certifications in environmental health and safety such as Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Registered Environmental Professional or Registered Environmental Manager.
- Knowledge of agency, professional and/or industry standards and practices.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of applicable measurement and/or sampling methods and technologies.
- Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite.
- Professional customer service skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to obtain and maintain 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
- Ability to pass a pulmonary function test and be medically cleared to wear a respirator.
- Must be able to drive a university vehicle.
- This job requires a class “C” operator’s driver’s license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the state in which the person currently resides. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver’s license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
- May work around chemicals, chemical fumes, radiation and/or biohazards.
- May work around electrical and mechanical hazards.
