Principal Power Electronics Engineer II – Aerospace & Satellite Systems

We are seeking a Principal Power Electronics Engineer II to join our growing hardware engineering team. This role is ideal for professionals who are passionate about pushing the boundaries of power electronics design for space and aerospace applications, and who thrive in a fast-paced, startup-style environment.

About The Role

In this position, you will lead the development of power electronics circuits and systems from initial concept through to production and operational support. You will focus on two key product domains:

  • Optimized point-of-load converters for RF and digital modules (typically 1W–50W).
  • Standalone DC-DC converter modules (typically 20W–500W).

Your responsibilities will span a wide range of design areas, including:

  • Isolated and non-isolated DC-DC converters
  • Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) solar converters
  • Magnetic component design and analysis
  • System-level power management and distribution
  • Switching and linear regulators
  • Filters and stability analysis

As a principal-level engineer, you’ll oversee projects end-to-end: setting product roadmaps, generating block diagrams, performing part selection, schematic design, layout and routing, analysis, manufacturing coordination, testing, and qualification. You’ll also serve as a technical mentor, shaping best practices and supporting the development of junior engineers.

This role includes presenting technical designs to executive leadership and customers, as well as participating in proposal-writing efforts. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own all phases of power electronics design from concept to deployment.
  • Design power architectures, including PoL and standalone DC-DC systems.
  • Lead schematic creation, PCB layout, and circuit analysis.
  • Collaborate with contract manufacturers and internal teams for production, test, and qualification.
  • Conduct hands-on prototyping, lab testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Present at design reviews and contribute to proposals.
  • Mentor junior engineers in both technical and professional growth.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • 11 years of experience in power electronics design, analysis, testing, and troubleshooting (industry or academic).
  • Demonstrated success leading designs through full product lifecycle.
  • Proficiency in power system architecture design and optimization.
  • Expertise in circuit analysis methods including:
  • Worst-case circuit analysis
  • Failure mode and effects criticality analysis (FMECA)
  • Reliability analysis
  • Mastery of electronics design tools (e.g., Altium).
  • Expert-level proficiency in PCB layout for power circuitry.
  • Experience with SPICE-based circuit simulation.
  • Familiarity with power integrity tools (e.g., Ansys, ADS).
  • Strong hands-on skills with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in space electronics design, development, and qualification.
  • Experience with EMI/EMC mitigation strategies and best practices.
