Overview
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a crucial role in providing compassionate care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, ensuring their well-being and enhancing their quality of life. This position involves working closely with clients in various settings, including group homes, assisted living facilities, and community-based environments. The DSP is responsible for assisting clients with daily living activities, promoting independence, and fostering a safe and supportive atmosphere.
Duties
- Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation.
- Provide patient care and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, including those with Alzheimer’s or dementia.
- Monitor and document vital signs and changes in client behavior or health status.
- Implement care plans and assist in medication administration as directed by healthcare professionals.
- Engage clients in meaningful activities that promote social interaction and cognitive stimulation.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for clients by performing light housekeeping duties.
- Utilize equipment such as Hoyer lifts for safe patient transfers when necessary.
- Support clients in community integration by facilitating outings and social activities.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations to protect client confidentiality.
Qualifications
- Experience working in home health, hospice care, or long-term care settings is preferred.
- Familiarity with patient observation techniques and monitoring vital signs.
- Certification in First Aid and CPR is highly desirable.
- Previous experience in caregiving roles, particularly with individuals who have autism or other disabilities.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with clients, families, and team members.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting as required for client mobility assistance.
- Knowledge of dementia care practices and memory care strategies is advantageous.
