HVAC Controls Systems Specialist

Salt Lake City, Utah


Position Summary -

Responsible for supporting the installation, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization of HVAC and building automation control systems. Works closely with project teams and clients to ensure systems operate efficiently, meet project specifications, and deliver reliable performance. Provides technical support, system diagnostics, documentation, and field training as needed.


Key Responsibilities :


System Testing & Commissioning -

  • Perform sequence testing and system verification to ensure proper operation and compliance with project specifications.
  • Inspect and test HVAC controls systems to identify deficiencies, malfunctions, or performance issues.
  • Verify proper installation and operation of control components, sensors, and devices.
  • Review project drawings, specifications, and system designs to understand project requirements and scope.
  • Support startup, commissioning, and optimization activities for building automation systems.


Point-to-Point Verification -

  • Conduct point-to-point checkout and functional testing of system components and devices.
  • Diagnose and analyze performance issues within controls systems, assemblies, and equipment.
  • Operate standard and specialized testing equipment to validate system functionality.
  • Confirm proper sensor placement, calibration, and communication throughout the system.


Graphics & System Interface Development -

  • Develop and maintain graphical user interfaces, system dashboards, and building automation graphics.
  • Create control system layouts, floor plans, and visual representations of building systems.
  • Present graphics, layouts, and proposed modifications to project teams or clients for review and approval.
  • Support improvements to system visualization and user accessibility.


Troubleshooting & Service -

  • Troubleshoot HVAC controls systems, electrical components, and mechanical equipment.
  • Repair or replace damaged, worn, or malfunctioning system components.
  • Diagnose system issues and verify corrective actions resolve operational problems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities including panel cleaning, terminal tightening, and system inspections.
  • Recommend system improvements to increase operational efficiency, reliability, and performance.
  • Provide technical support and guidance related to equipment installation, repairs, and system design.


System Adjustments & Optimization -

  • Configure and adjust system controls to meet operational standards and project requirements.
  • Optimize control system settings for maximum efficiency and performance.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts related to system functionality and building performance.


Documentation & Reporting -

  • Maintain accurate records of labor, materials, testing results, deficiencies, and completed work.
  • Complete service reports, work orders, expense reports, and operational documentation.
  • Compile project closeout documentation including completion certificates, training forms, and punch lists.
  • Document field changes and provide updated sketches or redlines as required.


Training & Team Support -

  • Provide guidance and support to technicians and team members in the field.
  • Assist with training individuals on tools, equipment, and system operation.
  • Mentor junior team members and support daily field activities.
  • Recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency, quality, and consistency of work.


Qualifications -

  • Associate degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with HVAC controls, building automation systems, or related mechanical/electrical systems.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC systems, controls components, and building automation operations.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems, electronics, control wiring, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience reading and interpreting drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with system testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in field and project environments.

Salary : $65,000 - $90,000
