Job Description

Position Description: The Departments of Earth and Planetary Science, Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, and Human Evolutionary Biology seek to appoint a tenure-track professor who conducts foundational research in the broadly defined areas of biodiversity, conservation, and/or land surface processes using remote sensing, AI and other advanced techniques. Candidates in allied disciplines, or who are engaged in cross-disciplinary research, are encouraged. The appointment is expected to begin on July 1, 2027. We seek an outstanding individual who will establish an innovative research program and teach both undergraduate and graduate students.

In Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, tenure-track positions are untenured.

Basic Qualifications: A doctorate or terminal degree in a field of science related to land surface processes, biodiversity, conservation or related disciplines is required by the time the appointment begins.

Additional Qualifications: Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching and advising is desired.

Special Instructions: To be considered for this appointment, please submit the following materials through the ARIeS portal (https://academicpositions.harvard.edu/postings/16863). Candidates are encouraged to apply by December 1, 2026; applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.

  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Teaching/advising statement (describing the candidate’s teaching philosophy and practices as well as their approach to creating a learning environment in which students are encouraged to ask questions and share their ideas)
  • Research statement
  • Service statement describing efforts to strengthen academic communities, e.g., the candidate’s department, institution, and/or professional societies.
  • Names and contact information of 3-5 referees, who will be asked by a system-generated email to upload a letter of recommendation once the candidate’s application has been submitted. Three letters of recommendation are required, and the application is considered complete only when at least three letters have been received. At least one letter must come from someone who has not served as the candidate’s undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral advisor.
  • Publications or copies of creative works, if applicable
