What are the responsibilities and job description for the Strategist, egX position at Eurasia Group?
Title: Strategist, egX
Background: egX, Eurasia Group’s new platform-style business, is fast becoming the hub for solutions to complex business problems where politics is a key vector. We deploy best-in-class political insights into the heart of business challenges so that companies get a single holistic picture upon which to base a business decision. Our clients love us because we solve their problem in its entirety; fusing political insights with whatever other skill set(s) are necessary to arrive at a solution. And we do so by building teams / solutions that draw on Eurasia Group’s in-house analyst platform and trusted external partners.
The role: This role is to be the core person for discrete, time-bound client projects within egX. It includes three main components with a broad indication of the split in effort:
- Business Development (40%): Finding new clients for egX. This involves identifying prospective clients from Eurasia Group’s existing client base, the clients and networks of our partner organisations, and greenfield areas where Eurasia group does not have existing business relationships. It includes developing capability statements, writing proposals, pitching and negotiating contracts, all of course with the support of the rest of the egX and Eurasia Group team.
- Project Delivery (40%): Project managing delivery of client projects. This means being the single point of coordination and management for delivering the solution to the client. It involves identifying who has the skills for delivering the scope within or outside Eurasia Group, briefing them, quality controlling their outputs, and putting together the final client deliverable by combining various inputs.
- Platform Management (20%): Building and maintaining our solutions database. This involves on-boarding new external delivery partners and acting as a ‘clearing house’ for the various skill sets we can draw on for immediate and future projects. It means proactively thinking about the knowledge and capability sets we need to be building to deliver on the egX concept and operationalising that.

Skills and competencies for success: The core skill sets needed to succeed in this role are very similar to those on a top-tier management consulting environment. That doesn’t mean that management consulting experience is a pre-requisite for the role (although is desirable), but simply that many of the same competencies would be valuable here. These include:
- Optimism: Being predisposed to thinking that something can be done – even if the full picture isn’t yet evident – is fundamental to success in this role. Seeing opportunity where others might see insurmountable roadblocks will be a core determinant of success.
- Scrappiness: The solutions to the client challenges that egX takes on are often without precedent and haven’t been done before. There’s also no set recipe or manual to follow. Being innately resourceful and driven to find – or rather, create – solutions is absolutely key.
- Comfortable with ambiguity: Because egX is in spirit a problem-solving machine, the end-state of a client challenge or the path to get there is rarely evident from the start. Being comfortable with not knowing how exactly things will shape up and course correcting multiple times is a core part of the role.
- Teaming: The role involves attracting delivery partners within and outside Eurasia Group to come together and solve a challenge. Being able to get on with people and make it worth everyone’s while to take on the tasks needed is a key success factor.
- Multidisciplinary: Rarely are two projects similar in subject matter, scope or approach, so being comfortable operating across a wide range of subject matters is essential. Of course, being an expert in all is not expected, but the ability to learn quickly and become literate enough to manage subject matter experts certainly is.
Salary: Competitive with similar level roles at a Strategy Consulting or Big Four firm.
