Youth Services Librarian
Under the general supervision of the Director, the Youth Services Librarian is responsible for planning and implementing all programs and services directed towards patrons under the age of 18.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Create varied literature-based pre-school story time programs, entertaining and enriching programs for school-age children, interactive tween and teen programming, as well as the annual Summer Reading Program
- Maintains good relations with the public and other library staff; communicates effectively, courteously and tactfully
- Act as a link between the library and various children’s service providers such as schools, family resource centers, and day care centers
- Assists library users in locating materials or refers them appropriately to others who can help
- Performs reference and reader’s advisory services in person, by telephone and by e-mail using materials in a variety of formats
- Participates in all tasks to accomplish efficient and accurate checking in and checking out of all types of materials
- Registers new library users and issues library cards and other necessary circulation duties
- Attends continuing education opportunities as appropriate
- Creates content and updates for the library website and social media outlets with new services and special events in collaboration with staff
- Promotes media coverage of Library activities, special events and services through the local newspaper, press releases and photo opportunities
- Willingness to learn new technology and technology trends
- Develops a diverse collection of materials for youth including the selection, deselection (weeding), categorization, and over all organization of materials in a variety of formats
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Physical Demands
- Reaching, bending, kneeling, crouching, to retrieve and replace library materials and to conduct programs
- Movement throughout the library locating and retrieving materials that assist patrons
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and push fully loaded book carts weighing 50 or more pounds
- Coordinate multiple responsibilities simultaneously and meet deadlines
- Inside work environment with occasional outside work
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
- Talking/Reading aloud to groups for 30-45 minutes more than one time per day
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study, preferred
- Relevant work experience in a public library or public service setting
- High level of comfort with standard office software, including Microsoft Office products, email, and Internet usage
- Valid Kentucky Driver’s License
- Must be able to meet and maintain Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) certification requirements
- Work some evenings and weekends; maintain a flexible schedule which meets the objectives of the position
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups
- Capacity to work effectively alone and with others; demonstrate initiative; plan and execute short- and long-term projects; stay organized, establish goals, and follow procedures
- Ability to develop programs and services to meet community needs
- Good knowledge of reader interest levels, books and authors, and the library guides and publications
Pay & Benefits
- Full time, 37.5 hours per week
