Job Summary:
The Dietary Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking nutritious, appetizing meals for residents in a long-term care facility. This role ensures meals meet dietary requirements, physician orders, and regulatory standards while maintaining high food safety and sanitation practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and cook meals according to planned menus, standardized recipes, and special dietary requirements (e.g., diabetic, low-sodium, pureed diets).
- Ensure food is prepared in compliance with residents' individualized care plans and physician-ordered diets.
- Monitor food temperatures and ensure proper food handling, storage, and sanitation procedures.
- Assist with menu planning and suggest substitutions when necessary.
- Portion and serve food in appropriate quantities and textures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized kitchen environment in accordance with health department regulations.
- Inspect and ensure quality of ingredients and finished meals.
- Work collaboratively with dietary staff, nursing staff, and dietitians.
- Follow all facility policies and procedures, including infection control and safety guidelines.
- Assist with inventory, food ordering, and stock rotation (FIFO method).
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous cooking experience, preferably in healthcare, long-term care, or institutional food service.
- Knowledge of therapeutic diets and food textures is preferred.
- Food safety certification (such as ServSafe) may be required.
- Ability to follow standardized recipes and dietary guidelines.
- Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
