Job Title:              School Speech-Language Therapist

Department:      Speech Therapy

Reports to:          Principal 

SUMMARY

Provides Speech Language Therapy services as mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEP)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. To successfully perform this job, an individual must be able to successfully perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Responsibilities

  1. Provides individual student services as mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  2. Provides classroom collaborative and direct speech-language therapy services to individual children as indicated in the Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  3. Conducts speech, hearing and language screenings for three-year re-evaluations as needed for individual children, enrolled in the Achievement Centers for Children Autism School program as necessary
  4. Serves as a member of the educational team and as a liaison to related agencies and the community as necessary
  5. Completes all mandated process and procedures including Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and Evaluation Team Report (ETR) documentation, as part of the Multi-factored Evaluation (MFE) process
  6. Develops communication skills programs for all children served: uses assistive technology and/or various other alternative/augmentative non-verbal/total communication strategies as appropriate to individual need
  7. Serves as a resource person to all parents and staff
  8. Provides consultation and/or in-service for staff, parents and/or other speech-language pathologists regarding appropriate speech and language instructional strategies for classroom, home and/or community use
  9. Maintains accurate records, prepares and submits all required statistical reports as appropriate, including but not limited to progress monitoring, behavioral data collection service records
  10. Completes any additional duties as requested by the Director of Education and Program Manager(s).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS listed below are indicative of knowledge, skills, and abilities required to be successful in this position. 

Education

  1. Master's degree with a major in Communication Disorders or equivalent major.

Certifications and Licenses

  1. Eligible for Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.
  2. Eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio as a Speech-Language Pathologist.
  3. Eligible for a School Certificate from the Ohio Department of Education to work in the preschool classroom. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist in an urban school setting preferred
  2. Knowledge of learning styles and development growth patterns of children
  3. Demonstrated ability to provide speech and language services to children
  4. Interest in creating developmentally appropriate curriculum and classroom/collaborative models for instruction and/or therapeutic intervention
  5. Demonstrated ability to provide speech and language services to children

  1. Requires frequently lifting children weighing up to 75 pounds.
  2. Requires operating a computer keyboard.
  3. Requires standing for long periods of time.
  4. Requires observing and interacting with children in a variety of settings, which also includes the ability to see, hear, and speak to them.
  5. Requires mobility skills to effectively keep children challenged but safe.
  6. Requires operating specialized equipment such as swings, switch toys, and computers.
  7. Requires working on the floor and/or in a child-sized chair, including frequent bending, twisting and moving up/sown from the floor.
