Job Summary
The Director of Safety & Training is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and management of safety programs and training initiatives within a construction or transportation environment. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, evaluates training effectiveness, and drives a strong organizational safety culture. The Director of Safety & Training oversees curriculum development, classroom instruction, and training administration, while providing guidance to teams and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to maintain high safety standards.
Job Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day operations related to safety training and program management, representing organizational safety leadership.
- Evaluate and continuously improve safety training programs to ensure compliance, effectiveness, and alignment with organizational policies.
- Design, develop, and deliver occupational health and safety training programs for employees and external stakeholders.
- Administer technical and process-related programs to address training needs and monitor program effectiveness.
- Prepare and analyze safety performance metrics and training outcomes, providing insights to senior leadership.
- Maintain relationships with regulatory agencies and external stakeholders to ensure adherence to safety and environmental regulations.
- Participate in high-risk work scopes, ensuring appropriate risk mitigation and safety procedures are followed.
- Conduct periodic audits of construction sites to identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and recommend corrective actions.
- Track and evaluate safety measures to reduce hazards and improve organizational safety performance.
- Participate in Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings and lead initiatives to enhance safety culture.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, PESH, and other relevant federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to safety and training staff to support professional development and effective program delivery.
Job Requirements and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Construction Management, Education/Adult Learning, Public Administration, Organizational Development, or a related discipline; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum 7 years of safety experience in construction or related fields, with at least 4 years in training, supervisory, or leadership roles.
- Proven expertise in training administration, curriculum design, assessment of training methodologies, and classroom instruction.
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations, particularly 29 CFR 1926 Subpart C – Training and Education, and general construction safety principles.
- Understanding of EPA, PESH, and other federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations, including asbestos, lead, noise, and airborne hazards.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, PeopleSoft, Oracle, and other business tools; Adobe Captivate experience preferred.
- Required certifications: 30-Hour OSHA Construction Industry and OSHA 500 Authorized Outreach Trainer.
- Must complete NYC Transit Track Safety, Metro-North, or Long Island Railroad Roadway Worker Protection course before on-track work.
- Must provide work safety boots meeting organizational specifications and maintain use of a personal cell phone for work purposes.
- Preferred certifications/skills: First Aid/CPR (current), HAZWOPER, CIH or IHT, CIEC or CIAQP, asbestos and lead certifications, knowledge of NY State Construction Codes, indoor air quality consulting, and strong business administrative skills.
- Strong communication, team-building, problem-solving, and prioritization skills.
- Ability to perform site audits, participate in high-risk operations, and provide leadership in enforcing safety standards.
