About the Role
EqualAccess is partnering with a vertically integrated real estate organization managing a large portfolio of affordable, mixed-income, and rent-regulated housing across New York City.
We are seeking a Director of Compliance to lead regulatory compliance strategy, oversee audits and lease-ups, and manage a team responsible for portfolio-wide adherence to city, state, and federal housing requirements. This is a senior leadership role designed for someone who has operated at scale and understands the complexity of NYC housing compliance.
Portfolio & Team Scope
- Portfolio Size: ~2,500 residential units
- Team Leadership: Directly manages a team of 6 (5 Compliance Specialists, 1 Administrative support)
- Reporting To: Chief Operating Officer (COO)
- Travel: Required within NYC as needed for site visits, audits, and coordination
What You’ll Be Responsible For
- Leading compliance operations across an affordable and mixed-income housing portfolio
- Ensuring adherence to LIHTC, rent regulation, Fair Housing, and regulatory agreements
- Overseeing audits, monitoring visits, and corrective action plans
- Providing compliance leadership for new development lease-ups and portfolio transitions
- Managing, mentoring, and developing a team of compliance professionals
- Partnering cross-functionally with Leasing, Operations, Legal, and Asset Management
- Maintaining audit-ready systems, resident files, and reporting processes
- Interpreting regulatory changes and guiding implementation across properties
What We’re Looking For
- 7 years of affordable housing compliance experience
- Deep knowledge of LIHTC, rent-regulated, and mixed-income housing programs
- Proven experience leading audits and regulatory reviews
- Prior team management experience required
- Experience supporting new development lease-ups strongly preferred
- Strong executive presence, judgment, and communication skills
- Proficiency with enterprise property management systems (e.g., Yardi)
