What are the responsibilities and job description for the Member of Technical Staff position at Epic Placements?
Member of Technical Staff (Backend / Platform / Infra)
NYC (Onsite, 5 days/week)
$200K–$270K Equity
The Opportunity
This is not a typical startup engineering role.
This team is building an AI-native platform tackling one of the most complex, high-friction problem spaces out there: healthcare operations — where correctness, reliability, and system design actually matter.
They’ve already crossed the hardest threshold: real enterprise traction.
Now they’re in that rare phase where:
- customers are scaling quickly
- demand is outpacing engineering capacity
- and the next hires directly shape how the system evolves
You’re not coming in to “try ideas.”
You’re coming in to build the foundation that everything runs on.
Why this role stands out
- Real product-market fit ? not theoretical, already deployed with large enterprise customers
- Architecture-first engineering culture ? less “move fast,” more “build it right”
- High ownership ? engineers own problems end-to-end, not just tickets
- AI that actually matters ? directly impacts how clinical decisions get made
- Tight, high-caliber team (~50 people) ? still early enough to have real influence
- Strong backing ? top-tier investors AI leadership behind the company
What you’ll work on
- Designing and building core backend systems, APIs, and data pipelines
- Developing platform infrastructure that supports LLM-powered workflows
- Improving system reliability, observability, and performance
- Writing eval frameworks to improve AI system quality over time
- Debugging event-driven systems, logs, and production issues
- Building internal tooling that increases engineering leverage
- Working directly with customers to translate real-world workflows into product systems
- Contributing to platform architecture, SDKs, and developer tooling
What they’re looking for
This is a high-bar engineering team. Stack matters less than how you think.
Core signal:
- Strong engineering fundamentals (data structures, systems thinking, architecture)
Background:
- 1–7 years of experience (flexible for exceptional candidates)
- Experience at companies known for strong engineering culture (big tech, fintech, strong scale-ups, infra/data companies)
You likely fall into one of these lanes:
- Infrastructure / SRE / reliability
- Backend platform or data engineering
- Full-stack (with a clear backend or systems lean)
Technical exposure (not strict requirements):
- APIs, distributed systems, or data pipelines
- Cloud environments (AWS or similar)
- LLM / AI systems or eval frameworks (nice to have, not required)
Nice signals:
- Customer-facing engineering experience (forward deployed, integrations, etc.)
- GitHub / side projects / strong ownership indicators
What matters (and what doesn’t)
What matters:
- You care about building high-quality systems
- You want to own problems end-to-end
- You’re comfortable working in a collaborative, high-feedback environment
- You’re excited about architecture, data, and platform design
What doesn’t matter:
- Exact tech stack match
- Healthcare experience
- Specific frameworks
What won’t work here
- Looking for a pure managerial role
- Coming from low engineering rigor environments without strong system exposure
- Wanting a fully remote or low-collaboration setup
Logistics
- Location: NYC (5 days onsite)
