What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineering Intern - Airflow & CFD position at EOS?
Title: Mechanical Engineering Intern - Airflow & CFD
Responsible Manager: Director of Metals Technology, Global Additive Minds
Location: Pflugerville, Texas (On-Site)
We, EOS - world market leader for industrial 3D printing, are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical Engineering Intern to support the development of airflow systems for a next-generation large-format additive manufacturing platform.
This role focuses on the design, simulation, and experimental validation of airflow within the process chamber to enable effective removal of smoke, soot, and process byproducts. The intern will lead the development of a full-scale airflow test platform and use a combination of CAD, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and physical testing to optimize system performance. This is a hands-on, end-to-end engineering role with direct impact on production system design.
Your Mission
- Design and develop a modular airflow test system representing the process chamber
- Perform CFD simulations to analyze airflow patterns, velocity distribution, and pressure characteristics
- Design and evaluate inlet nozzles, outlet geometries, and ducting configurations
- Conduct experimental airflow testing, including smoke visualization and quantitative measurements
- Integrate and utilize sensors (anemometers, pressure sensors) for data collection
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams (mechanical, additive, systems)
- Document findings and provide final design recommendations
Your Talents
- Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
- Strong foundation in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics
- Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, NX, Creo, or similar)
- Exposure to or experience with CFD tools (ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM , OpenFOAM, etc.)
