Duties
- Assist patients in choosing eyewear that suits their prescription, lifestyle, and personal preferences, ensuring a positive shopping experience.
- Take precise measurements of pupillary distance, frame fit, and lens prescriptions to facilitate accurate optical corrections.
- Conduct basic eye assessments such as vital signs and visual acuity tests to support comprehensive eye examinations.
- Prepare and verify medical records, ensuring all documentation aligns with HIPAA regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
- Manage optical inventory, including ordering lenses, frames, and supplies, while maintaining accurate retail math and stock levels.
- Collaborate with ophthalmologists and optometrists to understand treatment plans, medical terminology, and laboratory results related to eye health.
- Operate electronic health record (EHR) systems like Epic or EMR platforms to document patient interactions thoroughly.
- Educate patients on proper lens care, frame adjustments, and the importance of regular eye exams for pediatric and senior care populations.
- Support retail sales efforts by providing product knowledge, upselling appropriate eyewear solutions, and achieving sales targets.
- Follow aseptic techniques during lens fitting procedures to ensure patient safety and hygiene standards are met.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in optical retail or clinical settings with a strong understanding of optical experience and anatomy knowledge related to the eye.
- Knowledge of ophthalmology practices, medical terminology, medical coding, and medical billing processes.
- Familiarity with EMR systems such as Epic or other clinic management software is highly desirable.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex concepts clearly to diverse patient groups including pediatrics and senior care clients.
- Basic physiology knowledge related to vision health, vital signs measurement, and laboratory procedures.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.
- Prior laboratory experience or clinic experience is preferred; certification in opticianry or related fields is a plus.
- Understanding of HIPAA compliance standards for handling sensitive medical records is essential.
- Retail management skills including retail math, sales techniques, and customer service excellence are advantageous.
