JOB SUMMARY:

The Planning & Design Engineer II is a mid-level professional role responsible for applying advanced engineering knowledge, analytical methods, and independent technical judgment to the evaluation, conceptualization, and development of Facility Improvement Measures (FIMs). These initiatives include air-side and water-side system optimization, building automation system upgrades and tuning, and equipment replacement strategies. This role builds on foundational capabilities by managing projects, leading technical workstreams, and supporting integrated project delivery across disciplines. The Planning & Design Engineer II evaluates building system performance, analyzes energy usage patterns, and develops technically sound, cost-effective recommendations and design solutions that align with client objectives, operational requirements, and applicable codes and standards. The Planning & Design Engineer II collaborates across multiple disciplines and contributes to integrated project delivery by providing technical analysis, system evaluation, and data-driven recommendations, while also coordinating project execution and deliverables. Working in collaboration with senior technical staff and with increasing autonomy, this role exercises independent technical judgment in assessing system performance, developing solutions, managing project activities, and supporting project and client decision-making.


JOB RESPONSIBLITIES:

System Evaluation & Energy Analysis

• Conduct detailed on-site technical assessments of HVAC and building systems to evaluate performance,

identify inefficiencies, and develop Facility Improvement Measures (FIMs)

• Analyze building systems, operational data, and energy usage patterns to identify, quantify, and prioritize

improvement opportunities

• Perform energy audits (ASHRAE Level I & II), applying advanced analytical and technical principles to assess system performance and energy consumption

• Interpret building automation system data, trend logs, and mechanical drawings to evaluate system

operation, diagnose issues, and identify performance gaps

• Perform energy use calculations, load analysis, and energy modeling to estimate savings and validate

assumptions

• Develop and refine analytical approaches to quantify energy savings, system performance improvements,

and project impacts


Design Development & Technical Analysis

• Develop conceptual and detailed solutions for Facility Improvement Measures, including system

modifications, control strategies, and equipment replacement approaches

• Create, review, and interpret mechanical drawings, diagrams, and design documentation to support

implementation

• Apply advanced technical and analytical knowledge to evaluate system design alternatives and recommend optimal solutions based on performance, cost, and operational considerations

• Perform HVAC system analysis and validate design assumptions to support technical recommendations.

• Interpret and apply applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, ICC, NFPA) to ensure alignment with

regulatory and industry requirements

• Lead or contribute to design reviews and QA/QC processes to ensure technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency with project objectives


Project Contribution & Collaboration

• Lead or support planning-phase projects by identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing Facility Improvement

Measures for implementation

• Manage projects or major project components, including coordination of scope, schedule, and deliverables

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, project managers, and technical staff, to

support integrated project delivery

• Communicate technical findings, analyses, and recommendations clearly to internal stakeholders and clients

• Monitor project progress, identify risks, and address issues that could impact quality, schedule, or client

outcomes


Documentation & Communication

• Prepare and review technical documentation, including reports, summaries, calculations, and supporting

materials

• Document system deficiencies, performance issues, and recommended corrective actions in project

management systems

• Maintain accurate records of analyses, assumptions, and technical decisions to support project execution

and compliance requirements

• Communicate technical information clearly and effectively to internal and external stakeholders

• Follow all safety standards and complete required safety training

• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as appropriate for site work

• Report near misses and incidents in accordance with company procedures

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:

• Bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering, mechanical engineering, energy engineering, or related

technical field required

• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred

• 5 years of relevant experience applying engineering and analytical principles to building systems and

energy performance

• Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate complex systems and develop technical recommendations

• Experience managing projects or leading significant project components

• Experience mentoring or providing guidance to junior technical staff

• Strong knowledge of building energy systems, HVAC systems, and energy modeling principles

• Ability to perform advanced energy analysis, load calculations, and system evaluations

• Familiarity with applicable codes and standards such as ASHRAE, ICC, and NFPA

• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, construction documents, and technical specifications

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; AutoCAD and energy modeling software preferred

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines in a fast-paced environment

• Effective written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams

• Willingness to travel (5–20%) for site work


PHYSICAL, COGNITIVE, AND WORK ENVIRONMENT DEMANDS:

• Travel to commercial, institutional, industrial, and construction environments as required. Travel and site

time will account for approximately 15-25%.

• Perform a combination of field-based assessments and office-based analytical work

• Safely navigate a variety of environments, including active construction sites and mechanical spaces

• Perform physical activities such as walking, standing, climbing, lifting, and accessing equipment and systems

• Lift and carry equipment up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation

• Use computers, modeling software, and analytical tools for extended periods

• Perform detailed calculations, data analysis, and modeling requiring sustained concentration

• Maintain attention to detail and accuracy while managing multiple projects and deadlines
