Position Summary

Provide competent classroom and laboratory instruction in the area of credentialed expertise. The instructor will adhere to the general faculty guidelines as specified by the Calhoun Community College Personnel Handbook, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees.

An additional summer assignment may be available: $13,001 – $29,184 (3 months)
(Salary within this range is determined by your academic credentials and documented years of full-time related work experience)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach at varied times and places and in varied formats based on student demand; day or evening, in Decatur, Huntsville, or at other sites in the traditional classroom, hybrid, or web format.
  • Evaluate the progress of students in all classes according to institutional, divisional, departmental, and individual criteria.
  • Collect, maintain, and submit accurate class records including grades, attendance rosters, absences, withdrawal, and/or class drop information to appropriate offices.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of materials used in academic administration when requested, including course syllabi, program outlines, and catalog material.
  • Manage the welding facility to include all buildings within the welding area (including the maintenance and upkeep of the classroom and labs).
  • Assist in the development of discipline-specific student learning outcome objectives.
  • Assess student learning using multiple assessment strategies.
  • Analyze and interpret data relative to student learning and provide feedback to the institution and students for the purpose of improving and expanding student learning.
  • Manage the welding facility to insure that “industry type skills” are learned by students.
  • Order all materials for the maintenance of the facility and labs.
  • Keep all equipment in working or usable order.
  • Participate in scheduled in-service activities.
  • Provide academic and career advice to students and promote student leadership and enrichment experiences.
  • Provide advice to the administration on matters pertaining to the instructional program.
  • Be prompt and punctual in reporting for work. Maintain assigned office hours.
  • Continue as a competent instructor in welding by seeking new knowledge, improving pedagogy, and updating professional competencies.
  • Promote positive and productive relationships with service area businesses, industries, and agencies.
  • Perform all duties with professionalism.
  • Serve on committees engaged in furthering the work of the institution when appointed or when elected.
  • Become familiar with institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the College Catalog, Personnel Handbook, ADOC and Board Policy Manual; and follow such policies and procedures.
  • Perform other appropriate professional duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of an Associate degree in field from an accredited institution and a minimum of three (3) years documented successful full-time work experience in field is required.
  • Documented evidence of industry recognized credentials such as AWS, NCCER, etc. is required.
Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate through their experiences and accomplishments:
  • Documented evidence in the proficiency of use of internet, e-mail, and computer software programs (e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, etc.);
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Competency in the use of current educational technologies in the classroom and willingness to develop and teach web-based courses;
  • AWS (American Welding Society) certifications;
  • CWI (Certified Welding Inspector);
  • OSHA certifications;
  • Proven successful management of personnel, records, equipment, laboratories or shops, and facilities;
  • Ability to read and interpret industrial blueprints;
  • Experience with multiple brands and types of welding equipment;
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment including to review and update curriculum;
  • Experience in LEAN manufacturing practices and procedures;
  • Ability to deal effectively with diverse students, other employees, and the public;
  • Knowledge and experience with professional organizations such as SkillsUSA and AWS, which promotes leadership, work ethic, and skill attainment;
  • Willingness to interact regularly with business and industry to stay current with changing needs and promote positive and productive relationships;
  • Proficiency in the following areas: Flame and Plasma cutting processes, SMAW (Shielded Metal-Arc Welding) stick, GMAW (Gas Metal-Arc Welding), MIG, GTAW (Gas Tungsten-Arc Welding), TIG, OAQ (Oxyacetylene Welding);
  • Ability to conduct individual and small group instruction;
  • An understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of the community college system;
  • Successful problem solving skills;
  • Previous experience using WebCT, Blackboard, or other course management software, from an instructor standpoint;
  • Ability to learn new teaching pedagogy, and new software, as required;
  • An understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of the community college system;
  • Commitment to all students, including those of diverse ages, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds;
  • Successful college teaching experience.
