Position Summary
The full-time music instructor will be responsible for the preparation and teaching of music appreciation courses, applied lessons to wind and percussion students, and other courses based upon departmental need. Additionally, this position will direct the college and community instrumental/band ensemble(s) and will also actively participate in recruitment and retention. Other on-campus duties shall include but are not limited to college committee service, student advising, and divisional and college duties as assigned. Full-time faculty members are directly responsible to their division chairpersons and are required to devote a minimum of 35 hours per week to the performance of their on-campus duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Duties and Responsibilities
To adequately prepare for courses, the instructor provides first day course information which includes course objectives, outline of content, evaluation methods/grading criteria and student responsibilities relative to attendance, punctuality, conduct or other behaviors. The instructor reviews and revises course syllabi, textbooks and other materials, and methods in all courses taught as well as plans carefully for each class session.
In regard to classroom instruction, the instructor follows policies or procedures stated in first day course information, meets with classes regularly and punctually or makes other arrangements for all scheduled classes, teaches the class so as to meet the stated objectives of the course, maintains adequate and accurate student records, makes timely reports of student records, maintains and follows approved course syllabi in presentation of course content, and when assigned, teaches any or all of the following:
- Music Appreciation
- Music Theory/Music Theory Lab
- Basic Musicianship
- Applied Instrumental lessons
- Rehearsal and Performance I, II, III and IV
- Jazz Show Band
- Concert Band
The instructor is also expected to assist with the acquisition and maintenance of instruction-related equipment and to conduct appropriate learning assessments, which requires the instructor to follow stated criteria in grading student work, return student work promptly, and evaluate students based on stated objectives.
Responsibilities to Students
The instructor’s responsibilities to students include the following: treat all students impartially, treat all students with respect, be accessible to students outside of scheduled classes, advise students in planning their academic programs, promote leadership and enrichment experiences through student organizations and/or other activities as assigned, and accommodate students with documented disabilities.
Divisional Responsibilities
The instructor’s divisional responsibilities are as follows: attend and participate in divisional meetings, work cooperatively with others to plan and accomplish the goals of the division, provide input into curricula and program development, complete other tasks assigned by the division chairperson, and recruit students for participation in division programs.
Institutional Responsibilities
The instructor’s responsibilities to the College include the following: assist with division performances; assist with recruitment of personnel; assist with concert preparation and presentation; provide input for Student Services unit budget(s) for ensembles; assist with procuring and maintaining ensemble music, instruments and equipment; assist with providing a dynamic public relations service for the college; provide music education opportunities and entertainment for civic, community, state, education, and military organizations.
Further, the instructor should operate within the organizational structures and policies of the College; work cooperatively with others to plan and accomplish the goals of the College; attend and participate in college-wide meetings; participate on committees; sponsor student clubs, organizations, and teams as needed; and complete additional tasks assigned by the Dean of Instruction and/or the President.
Personal and Professional Development
The instructor’s personal and professional development obligations are as follows: participate in College sponsored professional development programs and remain informed of trends and developments affecting the instructor’s discipline and job performance, identifies own needs and seeks appropriate resources to meet goals for professional development.
Other Special Qualifications/Requirements of the Job:
Proficient in Word Processing, PowerPoint, Google Suite, Excel, and Canvas, etc. In addition, the applicant should be knowledgeable concerning web-based instruction and the delivery of instruction through the internet.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree with 18 graduate semester hours in field
- Evidence of successful band direction at the secondary or post-secondary level
- Evidence of high-level rehearsal/conducting skills
- Ability to develop and deliver traditional, hybrid, and online courses
- Experience teaching successfully at the college level.
- 3 years of successful high school or collegiate teaching experience.
- Strong evidence of successful recruiting and retention in a rural community.
- The ability to confidently teach multiple levels of Music theory
- Experience working with theatrical productions.

SALARY:
Salary Schedule D1 $42,108-$94,363 (9 month) $13,001-$29,184 (3 month), based upon the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule to be determined by the applicant’s years of applicable experience. Applicant acknowledges that if selected for the position that applicant’s placement on the applicable salary schedule will be dependent upon the verified information provided.
