Position Summary
Instructs Mechatronics students in laboratory procedures and exercises and assists in evaluation of student performance metrics and determination of student proficiency in the lab.
Requires knowledge of a body of information including the basics of electronics, mechanics, programmable logic controllers, motors, safety, manufacturing, process control, instrumentation, automation, robotics, hydraulics, pneumatics, precision measurement, CNC, and Industry 4.0. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations to the division chair or instructor of record for decision or guidance.
The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, lifting, or reaching; and other activities requiring above average agility and dexterity. The work environment involves moderate risks requiring special safety precautions, such as working around moving parts or machines, high voltage, and possibly irritant chemicals, and may require the use of personal protective equipment.
Requires flexibility in scheduled work hours, as lab instructor schedules change every 8 weeks during the fall and spring terms, and at the beginning of the summer term. Work hours are typically between 7am and 8pm Monday - Thursday, but some Fridays and weekends may be required for special events or circumstances. These hours are subject to change based on growth and expansion of the program. Works 15 to 19 hours per week.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Mechatronics laboratory instructors may be assigned to teach any combination of laboratory content by the Division Chair. Duties include the following and other duties may be assigned.
- Delivers laboratory instruction and evaluates and records student progress in the laboratory
- Employs appropriate teaching strategies in a laboratory setting
- Assist instructor of record in weekly assessment of student progress
- Inspect student work in progress and sign off on completion of student lab activities
- Assist with midterm and final practical exams
- Provide input to instructor of record for calculation of student lab grades
- Distributes tools, equipment, and supplies to students and ensures they are returned in working order following each lab activity
- Receive and interpret lesson plan, directives, or other information regarding curriculum, lab activities, and demonstrations
- Perform lab assignments in advance of classes to ensure all materials are accounted for, lab procedure can be followed as intended, and ensure ability to teach labs with detailed explanation and answer student questions
- Assemble and set up equipment, supplies, tools, and other materials as needed
- Provide guidance, advice, and instructional assistance to support student success, including providing tutoring in the subjects taught, basic mathematics, and reading comprehension
- Ensure students complete lab activities in a timely fashion and adhere to safety procedures
- Obtain and maintain technologically current knowledge in area of technical expertise and teaching methodology
- Interface with business and industry, as required, to maintain a working relationship with business and industry in the local area
- Remains current on technological and employment trends pertinent to area of instruction
- Maintain accurate records concerning student attendance, instructional objectives, learning outcomes, and submit reports required for the operation of an effective training program
- Conducts laboratory instruction in a wide variety of settings and timeframes to include day and evening at any instructional site
- Attend all scheduled faculty meetings
- Participates in curriculum review, evaluation, and revision
- Become familiar with and adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations contained in the faculty/staff handbook
- Participate in articulation and student recruiting efforts with public and private schools in the College’s service area
- Work well with and show respect to all College constituents
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Division Chair, Dean of Instruction, or the President
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Requires basic knowledge of electronics, mechanics, programmable logic controllers, motors, process control, robotics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and CNC machines.
- Must have knowledge of and comply with college policies and procedures.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and follow complex instructions, correspondence, and memos such as work orders, verbal and written instructions, warning labels, and safety procedures.
- Ability to read and write at a college level.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in problematic situations.
- Troubleshooting skills in electronics and mechanics are required.
- Must be able to communicate with technical support personnel in multiple disciplines in a professional manner to solve problems with equipment.
- Requires the ability to safely use a variety of lab equipment including low and high voltage systems, precision measurement tools, electric motors, hydraulic pumps, pneumatic compressors, valves, robots, motor control systems, process control systems, programmable logic controllers, basic hand tools, and other equipment.
- Requires attention to detail and precision in operation of high-dollar equipment that can be easily damaged if used improperly.
- Must demonstrate professional and cooperative behaviors when assisting coworkers, customers, and others as needed.
- Must dress appropriately for situations that may differ on a daily basis, such as business meetings, lab activities, equipment maintenance, etc.
- Requires discretion in dealing with sensitive or confidential matters.

Qualifications
- Minimum of associate’s degree and one year equivalent training/work experience/certification in mechatronics or a similar field such as electrical/electronics, manufacturing, mechanical, instrumentation, automation, machining, etc.
- Preference will be given to candidates with industrial experience and/or previous instructional experience in a lab environment.
- Preference will be given to candidates with specific experience in PLC programming, electronic circuits, process control, automation, instrumentation, electrical wiring, additive manufacturing, subtractive manufacturing, and/or mechanical systems.
