Position Title: Part-Time Diesel Mechanic
Position Summary
The Part-Time Diesel Mechanic is responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, inspections, and repairs on diesel-powered trucks, heavy equipment, and support vehicles. This position helps ensure fleet reliability, safety, and compliance with company and regulatory standards. The ideal candidate possesses strong troubleshooting skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform preventive maintenance services, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, and fluid inspections.
- Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, air brake systems, and suspension components.
- Conduct DOT inspections and ensure vehicles remain compliant with federal, state, and company safety standards.
- Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues using diagnostic equipment.
- Repair and replace defective components on refuse trucks, roll-off trucks, front-loaders, rear-loaders, and other fleet vehicles.
- Complete work orders, maintenance records, and inspection reports accurately and timely.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow all safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE requirements.
- Assist with parts inventory management and maintenance shop organization.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical training in diesel technology preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of diesel mechanic experience preferred.
- Experience working on heavy-duty trucks, refuse vehicles, or vocational equipment preferred.
- Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred or ability to obtain.
- ASE certifications are a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret maintenance manuals, wiring diagrams, and service bulletins.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and air brakes.
- Ability to safely operate maintenance tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Basic computer skills for maintenance tracking systems.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift up to 75 pounds with assistance.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions and maintenance shop environments.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Work Schedule
- Part-time hours, typically 20–29 hours per week.
