Assist individuals with brain injury, intellectual disabilities, and other neurological disabilities in achieving a challenging, stimulating, dignified life by serving as an advocate and liaison for and on behalf of individuals’ rights and benefits.
Essential Functions:
Provide supervision, training, and assistance in accomplishing activities of daily living, which includes, but is not limited to, self-care skills, social skills, recreation skills, community skills, and domestic skills for a 18 year old.

Empowering People’s Independence is seeking a Direct Support Professional (DSP) to work with a smart, active, outgoing young man in the Self-Direction program. This participant recently graduated from high school and would like to increase his independent living skills at home and within the community. The primary location for this position would be within the Syracuse/Camillus area, but the individual also enjoys traveling locally and exploring new places.
This individual is primarily seeking Community Habilitation staff. This position offers a flexible schedule for new applicants and does vary based on the individual’s needs and schedule. They are currently seeking daytime hours for staff and staff would need to work around their current job exploration programs/services. The individual and their family are looking for dedicated staff members to assist with increasing independent living skills, managing his personal schedule and participating in community classes and programs of interest.
We are seeking staff that are dependable, patient, and enthusiastic. Prior experience working with individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities would be a plus- but the team is willing to train the right applicant. A reliable vehicle and a New York State driver's license are required. Background check, fingerprinting and DMV record check will be conducted prior to hire by the agency. There is no cost to the applicant for any of these required checks.
Location: Syracuse/Camillus area
Shift Information: Primarily M-F daytime hours but there may be some weekends/evenings based on the individual’s needs and schedule.
Rate of Pay: Depends on experience- but could be up to $30/hr!

This position requires tasks that involve exposure to blood or body fluids that requires specific training for the employees’ safety.

- It should be noted that there is also an opportunity for staff to work additional hours in the Respite program to provide caregiver relief on an as needed basis.
- High school graduate or equivalent preferred; one-year experience in the human service field preferred.
- Maintain a valid New York State driver’s license; a vehicle is required to perform the job
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds
- Must be trained in all required trainings within 90 days of being hired and maintain current certifications with all required trainings
- Must demonstrate effective verbal and written communications skills
- Must be 18 years or older
- Applicants cannot have the same address as person supported
