Empowered Staffing is partnered with a fast-growing national real estate investment firm focused on multi-family properties & development. Due to continued growth, the company is seeking a Sr. Accounting Manager to join its Chicago team to oversee the accounting operations and enhance the financial processes and systems.
The Senior Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing property-level and portfolio accounting, with a strong emphasis on accurate, timely financial reporting to investors. This role manages the close process, ensures compliance with GAAP, and serves as a key liaison between accounts payable, asset management, and external stakeholders.
Responsibilities:
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for a portfolio of real estate assets
- Review and approve the property financial statements, including variance analysis and supporting schedule
- Ensure accuracy of general ledger activity, accruals, and reconciliations, and oversee the consolidation of multiple entities and ownership structures
- Prepare and review investor reporting packages (financial statements, capital accounts statements, IRR/return metrics, narratives), coordinate the distribution of reports to investors, and respond to inquiries
- Partner with asset management to explain financial performance and key drivers, and assist with waterfall calculations and investor distributions
- Ensure compliance with US GAAP, including revenue recognition and fair value considerations
- Support audits and coordinate with external banks and tax advisors, manage and mentor accounting staff, and establish and enforce internal controls and accounting policies
- Drive process improvements and efficiencies, particularly in reporting and systems
- Monitor property cash flow, assist with forecasting, review budgets vs. actuals, and support forecasting processes
- Oversee accounts payable/receivable processes related to properties
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance (CPA preferred)
- 7–10 years of accounting experience, with real estate/property accounting preferred
- Experience with investor reporting and complex ownership structures
- Strong understanding of GAAP and real estate-specific accounting
- Experience with AppFolio or similar property management/accounting systems
- Advanced Excel skills (financial modeling, data analysis)
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-accounting stakeholders
