Structural Engineer in Training, Bridges and Transportation Structures

Employment & Training Centers, Inc. is seeking a Structural Engineer in Training for a full-time opportunity with an established engineering firm.
This position is well suited for an early-career engineer who wants to gain hands-on experience designing bridges, tunnels, and other transportation structures. You will work closely with a Senior Engineer while contributing to structural calculations, construction plans, technical reports, and project coordination.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning and design of bridges, tunnels, and other transportation structures.
- Perform basic structural calculations and engineering analyses using approved design software.
- Help prepare structural drawings, specifications, presentations, technical reports, and supporting documents.
- Review project information and gather technical data needed to support design decisions.
- Assist with interpreting building codes, transportation standards, and engineering practices.
- Verify that assigned work complies with applicable codes and project requirements.
- Coordinate with civil, transportation, and other engineering disciplines under the direction of a Senior Engineer.
- Support construction activities through submittal reviews, responses to requests for information, and clarification of contract documents.
- Create and interpret engineering sketches, drawings, and structural details.
- Participate in occasional field assignments related to construction activities.
- Complete other engineering duties assigned by senior staff.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited university, with an emphasis in Structural Engineering.
- Engineer in Training certification or the ability to obtain it within six months of employment.
- Basic knowledge of structural engineering and general design principles.
- Basic working knowledge of MicroStation and other applicable engineering design software.
- Understanding of engineering calculations performed through design and analysis software.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Ability to create, read, and interpret sketches, engineering drawings, and structural details.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate with engineers, designers, and other members of a project team.
- Ability to evaluate information, solve problems, and communicate technical ideas clearly.
- Willingness to perform occasional field work when required.
Preferred Experience
- Internship, academic, or professional experience involving bridge or structural design.
- Exposure to transportation structures, including bridges, tunnels, retaining walls, or related infrastructure.
- Familiarity with structural analysis and design software.
- Knowledge of structural steel or reinforced concrete design.
- Exposure to construction documents, specifications, submittals, or requests for information.
- Familiarity with transportation agency standards and structural design codes.
