What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technology Legal Assistant position at EMERGE?
We’re looking for a detail-oriented Legal Administrative Assistant to join a growing legal team supporting attorneys within a Technology, Data Privacy & Cybersecurity practice. This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their legal support career who has already gained a few years of law firm experience and is ready to expand their skills in a specialized practice area.
The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a professional, fast-paced environment, managing competing priorities, and handling confidential client and firm information. While direct experience with privacy, cybersecurity, or technology law is a plus, the team is open to a strong junior candidate with a solid legal administrative foundation who is eager to learn and grow.
Because this is a smaller office, this position will have a broader scope than a traditional LAA role. In addition to supporting assigned attorneys, you’ll play an important part in keeping the office running smoothly, assisting with day-to-day administrative needs and providing backup support to the broader team.
Rewards
- Join a sophisticated Technology, Data Privacy & Cybersecurity legal practice and gain exposure to an increasingly specialized area of law.
- Opportunity to grow into the role and develop specialized legal knowledge with an experienced team.
- Work closely with attorneys and gain exposure to technology transactions, privacy, regulatory, and compliance matters.
- Become a key member of a close-knit Birmingham office where your contributions will have a visible impact.
- Competitive compensation based on experience.
- Full-time, on-site position with a collaborative and professional work environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day administrative and practice support to attorneys within the Technology, Data Privacy & Cybersecurity group.
- Prepare, proofread, format, and organize correspondence, legal documents, presentations, and other attorney materials.
- Maintain electronic and physical files while ensuring confidential client information is handled appropriately.
- Assist with document management involving privacy policies, agreements, compliance materials, and other sensitive client records.
- Manage attorney calendars, meetings, conference calls, travel, and other scheduling needs.
- Monitor important dates, deadlines, and follow-up items to help keep matters moving efficiently.
- Assist with billing, time entry, and other administrative processes with a high level of accuracy.
- Communicate professionally with clients, vendors, attorneys, and internal teams.
- Serve as a resource for general office needs, including front-door coverage, receiving packages, hospitality, and office coordination.
- Provide overflow assistance to the more experienced LAA supporting a larger attorney group.
- Step in to support other administrative team members as needed and contribute to projects of varying size and complexity.
Requirements
- 2–5 years of legal administrative or law firm experience; candidates with strong junior-level experience are encouraged to apply.
- A strong foundation in legal administrative support with the ability to learn a specialized practice area.
- Excellent organization, proofreading, written communication, and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple attorneys, deadlines, and competing priorities.
- Professional judgment and discretion when working with confidential information.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with legal document management systems such as iManage is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a professional, service-oriented approach.
- Willingness to take ownership of both routine administrative responsibilities and larger projects.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a team.
- Technology, cybersecurity, data privacy, or Big Law experience is a plus, but not required.
- Paralegal coursework/certification or exposure to privacy-related coursework is a plus.
- Must be comfortable working fully onsite five days per week in Birmingham.
