Position Summary
The Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing and compounding sterile medications in compliance with USP <797> and <800> standards, state and federal regulations, and company policies. This role supports pharmacists in delivering safe, accurate, and high-quality compounded medications for patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare sterile compounded medications under pharmacist supervision.
- Maintain aseptic technique and adhere to cleanroom protocols at all times.
- Perform proper garbing, hand hygiene, and environmental monitoring procedures.
- Operate and maintain laminar airflow hoods, biological safety cabinets, and other compounding equipment.
- Accurately measure, mix, and label medications according to prescriptions and batch records.
- Document compounding activities, including lot numbers, expiration dates, and quality assurance logs.
- Assist in inventory management, including ordering, receiving, and stocking supplies.
- Ensure compliance with USP <797>, USP <800>, OSHA, and state board of pharmacy regulations.
- Participate in routine cleaning and disinfecting of cleanroom and compounding areas.
- Report deviations, errors, or contamination risks promptly to supervising pharmacist.
Qualifications
Education & Certification:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Pharmacy Technician license required
- Sterile compounding certification or training preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 1 year of pharmacy technician experience preferred.
- Previous sterile compounding or cleanroom experience strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of aseptic technique and sterile compounding practices.
- Familiarity with USP <797> and <800> guidelines.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
- Strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity for precise compounding tasks.
- Ability to lift up to 45 pounds.
- Tolerance for working in controlled cleanroom environments (gowning, masks, gloves).
Work Environment
- Cleanroom and pharmacy setting with controlled temperature and humidity.
- Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including gowns, gloves, masks, and eye protection.
- Exposure to hazardous drugs (with appropriate safety controls in place).
Compliance & Standards
- Adherence to all regulatory and accreditation standards, including USP <797>, USP <800>, and applicable state and federal laws.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
