The Process Engineer plays a key role in supporting day-to-day operations, optimizing unit performance, and driving continuous improvement across a renewable fuels facility. This position provides hands-on technical support, evaluates opportunities to enhance efficiency and reliability, and contributes to the development and execution of process designs and strategic projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and provide technical input on engineering design packages, including heat and material balances, PFDs, P&IDs, utility summaries, equipment specifications, and battery limit documents.
- Define project scope for capital initiatives and prepare associated designs, justification analyses, and cost evaluations.
- Identify and implement improvements that enhance safety, performance, capacity, flexibility, and overall operating efficiency.
- Serve as a senior-level technical resource for process evaluations, unit optimization, project development, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance testing.
- Conduct studies to understand the impact of operating variables on product quality, yields, and profitability.
- Develop process specifications for troubleshooting, optimization, and new design work, including HMBs, PFDs, P&IDs, and equipment/instrument specifications.
- Participate in and occasionally lead core Process Safety Management activities, such as MOC, PHA, PSSR, and PSI development.
- Lead the planning, engineering, and execution of capital projects of varying scale.
- Recommend strategic capital investments that support long-term operational and business goals.
- Collaborate closely with Operations and Maintenance teams to diagnose issues and develop effective, sustainable solutions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering required.
- 1–3 years of experience in oil refining or renewable fuels required.
- Experience with hydrotreating and reforming operations preferred.
- Proficiency with developing HMBs, PFDs, and P&IDs required.
- Working knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards (ANSI, ASME, API).
- Experience performing pump hydraulics, line sizing, and pump curve analysis; ability to size control and relief valves preferred.
- Experience preparing equipment specifications for pumps, vessels, heat exchangers, and related systems; familiarity with evaluating vendor quotations.
- 1–3 years of experience with Process Safety Management programs preferred.
- Ability to perform core process engineering calculations (fluid dynamics, heat transfer, etc.).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; CADD experience is a plus.
