Electrical Test Technician
Madison and Milwaukee, WI areas
Traveling: 50-75% Per diem
Position Overview
The Test Technician is a foundational member of the field operations team responsible for supporting electrical testing, commissioning, and maintenance projects in industrial, utility, and commercial environments. This role provides hands-on experience and technical development through daily field execution, safety-focused work practices, and continuous learning opportunities.
Primary Responsibilities
Field Work Execution
- Perform assigned testing and commissioning tasks in accordance with approved test procedures, NETA ATS/MTS standards, and supervisor direction
- Arrive prepared for daily field activities with proper PPE, tools, and understanding of assigned tasks
- Support testing and maintenance of switchgear, transformers, protective relays, cables, breakers, and related electrical equipment
- Communicate unexpected conditions, abnormal readings, or equipment concerns to field leadership immediately
- Maintain clean and organized work areas throughout the duration of the project
- Represent the company professionally while interacting with clients, contractors, and field personnel
Data Sheet Accuracy & Documentation
- Accurately record all test data at the time testing is performed
- Complete all required documentation fields including equipment identification, measured values, instrument information, and as-found/as-left conditions
- Ensure documentation is legible, complete, and organized for review
- Identify and communicate any test results outside of acceptance criteria or customer specifications
- Submit completed documentation to field leadership daily for review and approval
Safety Responsibilities
- Follow all OSHA, NFPA 70E, lockout/tagout, arc flash, and site-specific safety requirements
- Exercise Stop Work Authority when unsafe conditions or uncontrolled hazards are identified
- Report all incidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions immediately
- Remain alert and safety-focused throughout all field activities
- Support a team-oriented safety culture by looking out for fellow crew members and addressing unsafe behaviors when observed
Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) Participation
- Participate actively in all Job Hazard Analysis discussions before work begins
- Understand hazards, control measures, and assigned responsibilities prior to starting work
- Notify leadership immediately if job conditions change and require reassessment of hazards
- Treat JHAs as critical safety tools and consistently apply identified controls throughout the workday
Asset & Equipment Care
- Properly handle, inspect, transport, and store all testing equipment, tools, PPE, and company assets
- Verify calibration status and equipment condition prior to use
- Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment immediately and remove unsafe equipment from service
- Maintain accountability for both company-owned and rental equipment
Technical Development & Apprenticeship Learning
- Actively participate in apprenticeship and technical development programs
- Track and log work hours, equipment exposure, and testing experience accurately within the designated system
- Seek opportunities to expand technical knowledge and field experience
- Complete assigned classroom training, online learning modules, and competency evaluations as required
- Demonstrate a willingness to learn and continuously improve technical and professional skills
Timesheet & Administrative Responsibilities
- Accurately record daily start times, stop times, breaks, and hours worked in the designated system
- Submit completed timesheets daily and ensure correct job numbers and cost codes are used
- Review timesheets for accuracy prior to submission
- Communicate payroll discrepancies or concerns promptly to management
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Technical school, electrical apprenticeship, or industrial maintenance training preferred
- Basic understanding of electrical systems, testing procedures, and industrial safety practices
- Ability to read electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documents preferred
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn
- Ability to travel and work in industrial, utility, and commercial environments
- Valid driver’s license required
