GENERAL SUMMARY, EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
Under general supervision, the Athletic Trainer supports student learning by providing daily management of performance programs to the students of Elkhorn Public Schools. The Athletic Trainer will evaluate and treat musculoskeletal injuries or illnesses and provide preventative, therapeutic, emergency, and rehabilitative care.
- Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training, sports science or a related field from an accredited college or university as defined by the NE Department of Health and Human Services; Masters degree preferred
- Hold a certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATA BOC) and maintain the standards established by the NATA
- Must be a member in good standing of the NATA and NATA District
- Maintain all licenses and certifications as required by law for the state of Nebraska
- Clear a state criminal record check and a child abuse check
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, WITH FREQUENCIES:
- (C) Works directly with student athletes in assessing and administering immediate care for athletic injuries to ensure student safety; Recommends rehabilitation and reconditioning programs when appropriate; Evaluates an athletes progress and readiness to play; Attends to the athletic training room
- (C) Exhibits exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written for a wide variety of audiences, including physicians, coaches, and parents. Provides accurate and timely documentation for all sports-related injuries, including assessments, treatment notes, referrals, and precautions while maintaining high quality standards for patient privacy
- (F) Ability to travel as needed, to various sporting venues, clinics or conferences within and outside the Omaha area, as well as out of state when necessary
- 4. (C) Regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job in order to maintain a student’s regular routines and foster strong working relationships; the ability to perform the identified tasks and possess the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the required work activities and physical requirements
(Duties may vary by season or student grade level, however, examples of typical performance responsibilities and job tasks are listed below (not intended to be all-inclusive). There may be other duties assigned to an Athletic Trainer by the Building Principal/Coaching staff as part of fulfilling goals that support student learning).
Performance Responsibilities and Job Tasks:
- Initiate and administer athletic training programs in accordance with school and activity guidelines
- Conduct assessments of athletic injuries, recommend treatment plans and monitor progress
- Communicate and collaborate with physicians when necessary to relay health information and develop treatment plans for injuries
- Advise athletes on the proper use of equipment and provide instruction when needed
- Communicate with coaches, athletes, and parents in the care and prevention of athletic injuries
- Inspect equipment and playing fields to ensure safety and avoid potential hazards
- Perform general administrative tasks, such as maintaining training records and/or writing progress reports
- Attend sports clinics, camps, and sporting events as required
- Enforce rules or policies governing student behavior
- Motivate and encourage students to be successful
- Demonstrate positive attitude, school loyalty, cooperation, teamwork, and safety mindedness on the job
- Maintain the same high level of professionalism, ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of certified teachers
Other Duties:
- May work evenings and weekends, outside of regular work hours, in order to attend sporting events, athletic camps or clinics, other school events, as required
