CONTROLLER
The purpose of this role is to oversee the accounting operations of all three operating companies and two real estate companies, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulations, and effective management of financial resources. This position plays a crucial role in the overall accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness of the accounting functions.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (approx. time spent annually)
- Assist in leading the accounting team, including oversight of the accuracy and timeliness of daily accounting activities: cash management, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory tracking, payroll-related entry, general ledger reconciliations (20%)
- Assist in managing all external audits (2%)
- Manage timely and accurate month end close and related reporting for all entities (10%)
- Lead the accounting team in preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (20%)
- Preparation of departmental reports and analysis (10%)
- Preparation of product costing analysis (10%)
- Financial statement analysis (2%)
- Oversee customer credit management (2%)
- Manage state, local taxes (incl personal property taxes) reporting and payments (2%)
- Manage insurance and workers’ compensation reporting and payments (1%)
- Manage the accounting for Fixed Assets projects, additions, and disposals (1%)
- Manage the retirement plan contributions and matching calculations (1%)
- Interface with auditors and insurance companies (1%)
- Maintain internal controls, improve processes and procedures (5%)
- Prepare consolidated and individual annual financial plan for three operating companies (1%)
- Prepare and send packet for quarterly reporting to board members (1%)
- Manage multi-state tax compliance (1%)
- Manage, lead, train, and develop accounting staff (10%)
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide guidance to accounting team on developing and maintaining processes to maximize efficiency and effectiveness
- Provide guidance and leadership to accounting team on documenting the standard operating processes and cross-training within the team
- Collaborate with business areas to provide reporting and analysis to gain insights on controllable costs and to encourage continuous improvement of processes
- Work with human resources in areas of compliance and employee benefits and backup payroll
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, CPA preferred
- 7 years progressive accounting experience
- 3 years as Controller
- Experience in cost accounting preferred
- Excellent Excel skills
- Experience working with SQL databases or equivalent
- Experience developing financial and operational measurements and reporting tools
- Expert organizational and analytical skills
- Excellent communication skills: ability to express ideas clearly in both written and verbal communications
- Effective leadership skills, modeling a collaborative mindset
- Ability to build teamwork and relationship with team members, operations, and executives
- Lumber and/or manufacturing background preferred
