Assistant Project Manager (APM) – Commercial Construction
What the Role Is
Our client, a highly respected commercial contruction firm, is seeking an Assistant Project Manager. The APM supports the Project Manager (PM) in planning, coordinating, and executing commercial construction projects such as restaurant construction, office and hospitality renovations, and mid-rise ground-up and mixed‑use developments. The role is both technical and administrative, and it’s often a key career progression step toward Project Manager.
Project Coordination
- Assist with project schedules, milestones, and deliverables
- Track progress against the master schedule
- Coordinate with superintendents, subcontractors, and consultants
Cost & Budget Support
- Help manage project budgets, cost tracking, and forecasts
- Support change order review and documentation
- Assist with pay applications and subcontractor invoicing
Contract & Documentation
- Maintain project documentation (RFIs, submittals, drawings, logs)
- Review submittals and shop drawings for completeness
- Draft and distribute meeting agendas and minutes
Communication
- Serve as a liaison between field teams and office staff
- Communicate updates to owners, architects, engineers, and vendors
- Participate in owner and subcontractor meetings
Quality & Compliance
- Support quality control processes
- Help ensure compliance with contract requirements, safety standards, and permits
- Assist with punch lists and closeout documentation
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or related field
- 1–5 year's experience in commercial construction (internships or field roles count)
Technical Skills
- Construction documents (plans & specs)
- RFIs, submittals, change orders
- Scheduling basics (Primavera P6, MS Project, or similar)
- Procore or similar construction management software
- Bluebeam, Excel, and Word
Soft Skills
- Strong organization and attention to detail
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Time management and multitasking
- Problem-solving mindset
- Ability to work with field and office teams
