Position Title:       Migrant/Multilingual Family Advocate; serving grades TK–5th

Reports to:           Director of Migrant & Multilingual Services

 

 

Classification:       Classified Non-Supervisory, Non-Union Represent; FLSA Non-Exempt

Salary Range        Instructional Para II Salary Placement- Current PSE Contract Salary Schedule

 

Assignment:        School calendar year position, 180 days plus 10 paid holidays; 7.5-8 hours per day; schedule will require                                flexibility for occasional evening events, family outreach activities, and home visits as needed.

 

Benefits:            Position qualifies for employer contribution to medical benefits; Retirement contributions and plans.                                        Earned sick leave, 10 days per year or prorated from date of hire; personal days, 3 days per year or                                      prorated from date of hire; up to 10 paid holidays per year.

Position Summary

The Migrant/Multilingual Family Advocate works to strengthen partnerships between school, home, and community in order to support the academic success, well-being, and engagement of migrant and multilingual students in Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade. The Family Advocate serves as a trusted connection between families and schools by building relationships, reducing barriers to participation, and helping families access educational, social, and community resources.

This position works collaboratively with school staff, families, and community agencies to ensure students and families receive the support necessary to successfully navigate the school system and actively engage in their child’s education. The Family Advocate promotes culturally responsive communication, family empowerment, and equitable access to opportunities and services for multilingual and migrant families. The positions requires driving a vehicle (personal or District) for work related activities which may include driving with students/parents and family members and requires candidate to make home visits by themself often times during afterschool hours.

The successful candidate is a compassionate, organized, and self-directed individual who is committed to advocacy, relationship-building, and student-centered support.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Build positive, trusting relationships with migrant and multilingual students and their families.
  • Serve as a liaison between home and school to strengthen communication and mutual understanding.
  • Support family engagement by helping families understand school programs, language development and primary language support, student progress, academic expectations, and available educational opportunities.
  • Conduct home visits and family outreach to increase engagement and address barriers impacting student success.
  • Assist families in accessing school and community resources including health services, food assistance, housing resources, clothing, childcare, mental health supports, and other social services.
  • Collaborate with teachers, counselors, administrators, and support staff to identify and respond to student and family needs.
  • Assist in identifying barriers including educational disruption, language barriers, social isolation, economic hardship, or other factors impacting student achievement and engagement.
  • Connect families to migrant, multilingual, and other district programs and services for which they may qualify.
  • Assist with planning and supporting family engagement events, parent meetings, workshops, and informational sessions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, records, logs, referrals, and required program data in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities related to migrant education, multilingual services, family engagement, and culturally responsive practices.
  • Collaborate with community organizations and agencies to strengthen partnerships and expand support systems for families.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with students, families, and staff.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of district and program goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Associate’s degree required in human development, education, family support, social work, community services, or a related field.
  2. Two years of direct experience working with families and schools required.
  3. Bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish required.
  4. Successful experience working with migrant, multilingual, or culturally and linguistically diverse families preferred.
  5. Ability to build trusting relationships with students, families, staff, and community members.
  6. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  7. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of a team.
  8. Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  9. Ability to prioritize tasks and respond flexibly to family and student needs.
  10. Knowledge of school and community resources available to children and families preferred.
  11. Experience conducting outreach, home visits, and family engagement activities preferred.
  12. Knowledge of cultural, economic, social, and educational factors influencing migrant and multilingual families preferred.
  13. Proficiency with basic computer programs and data systems including Microsoft Office and Google platforms.
  14. Ability to maintain accurate documentation and confidential records.
  15. Flexibility in work schedule to support family engagement activities and outreach efforts.
  16. Expected to attend work regularly and model appropriate professional behavior.
  17. Ability to clear a FBI and Washington State Patrol Background check.
  18. Valid Washington Driver's License and insurance.
  19. Ability to attend meetings and trainings that may require out of town and overnight stays.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of migrant education programs and multilingual learner supports.
  • Experience working in schools or community-based organizations serving children and families.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices.
  • Experience facilitating parent education, workshops, or community outreach activities.
  • Ability to advocate effectively for families while maintaining collaborative relationships with school staff.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally with assistance and 20 lbs independently.
  • Ability to move throughout classrooms and school environments to support student learning and supervision.
