Role Description
This is a full-time, Route Buyer role based in Joliet, IL and covers the greater Chicago area. The Buyer will work directly with regional suppliers such as auto dismantlers, recycling and salvage yard operators, repair shops, scrap yards, and commercial sellers to source catalytic converters for recycling. Day-to-day responsibilities include identifying and visiting prospective and existing suppliers, evaluating catalytic converter material, preparing competitive purchase offers, and negotiating pricing within established guidelines. The role also involves accurately recording transaction details, coordinating logistics for material pickup or delivery, and ensuring adherence to company policies and safety standards. The Buyer will collaborate with internal teams on market updates, inventory needs, and process improvements to support a transparent, reliable selling experience for partners.
Qualifications
- Experience in purchasing, materials buying, or procurement of scrap/recycling, preferably related to automotive parts or metals is desired.
- Strong negotiation, relationship-building, and customer service skills for working with diverse commercial sellers.
- Solid numerical, analytical, and basic computer skills for pricing, recordkeeping, and reporting.
- Knowledge of scrap, metals, or recycling markets is preferred; familiarity with catalytic converters is a plus.
- Comfort working in auto recycling and salvage yards, warehouses, or industrial environments, with attention to safety and compliance.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally to visit suppliers within the Greater Chicago area.
- Ability to work independently, manage a territory, and meet volume and margin targets.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in business, supply chain, or a related field is an asset.
- Willingness to learn company grading methods, pricing tools, and operational procedures.
