What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technical Associate Director – NERC and Large Load Technical Services position at Electric Power Engineers?
Overview
We are designing the grid of the future!
Build and lead a specialized team delivering NERC compliance and technical advisory services to data center operators, large load entities, and transmission stakeholders navigating the evolving regulatory landscape. Responsibilities span team development, client engagement, product and service design, business development support, and cross-functional collaboration with EPE's marketing and BD teams.
Responsibilities
How you can make an impact:
- Build and lead a high-performing team of power systems engineers specializing in NERC large load compliance, stability analysis, and interconnection technical services — recruiting, developing, and retaining top engineering talent.
- Develop EPE's large load service portfolio — define, scope, and bring to market technical products and services that prepare data center and large load clients for emerging NERC standards and regulatory requirements, including those arising from NERC's Large Loads Action Plan.
- Serve as EPE's subject matter expert on NERC large load regulatory developments, monitoring evolving standards, FERC orders, and ISO/RTO requirements (including ERCOT and PJM) that affect large load interconnection and compliance obligations.
- Support business development and marketing by translating complex regulatory and technical topics into clear, compelling client-facing content — white papers, presentations, webinars, and proposals — that help existing and prospective clients understand what is coming from NERC and how EPE can help.
- Lead client engagements for large load interconnection and NERC compliance projects, serving as the senior technical point of contact and ensuring deliverables meet quality, schedule, and budget objectives.
- Develop and maintain technical study methodologies for large load stability assessments, dynamic load modeling, and NERC compliance studies, leveraging industry-standard platforms such as PSS/E, PSCAD, TSAT, and PSLF.
- Collaborate with EPE's NERC and Regulatory Compliance, Grid Analysis and Interconnection, and Transmission Planning and Operations practice areas to ensure integrated, cross-functional service delivery.
- Drive process improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance team efficiency, study quality, and scalability of service delivery as large load demand grows.
- Support RFP responses and scope of work development, clearly articulating EPE's technical approach, deliverables, and value proposition to large load and data center clients.
- Represent EPE at industry forums, NERC stakeholder processes, and client events to advance EPE's visibility and thought leadership in the large load space.
Qualifications
Bring your passion, here's what’s needed:
- Bachelor of Science (or Applied Science) or higher in Electrical Engineering with a power systems emphasis; advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 12 years of working experience in the power systems industry (in excess of degree requirements), with at least three years in a technical leadership or people management role.
- Deep knowledge of NERC reliability standards and the regulatory process, with specific familiarity with emerging large load requirements, NERC's Large Loads Action Plan, and related FERC directives.
- Strong understanding of large load interconnection processes across at least one major ISO/RTO, with ERCOT or PJM experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in power system stability analysis — transient stability, voltage stability, frequency stability, and/or small-signal stability — as applied to large load or generation interconnection studies.
- Proficiency with at least one industry-standard power system analysis platform: PSS/E, PSCAD, TSAT, or PSLF.
- Proven ability to develop and commercialize technical services — translating engineering expertise into structured, scalable client offerings.
- Proven track record of supporting or leading business development activities, including proposal writing, client presentations, and scope development.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical and regulatory topics clearly to both engineering and non-technical audiences.
- Proven team player with strong organizational skills and the ability to build and maintain internal and external relationships across engineering, BD, and marketing functions.
- High standards for quality — takes ownership of work product and holds the team to the same standard.
