Financial Counselor
Job Overview:
Responsible for receiving and documenting Financial Assistance Applications for patients and obtaining authorized signatures. Works with Extended Business Office to provide all necessary data for initial submission of accounts and monitor returned/closed accounts and moves to Outside Collection Agency. Sends Medicare Bad Debt files to CAH consultant in a timely manner. Promptly answers all patient calls regarding account balances and resolves or reports to PFS Manager if there are issues. Contacts all self-pay/uninsured patients identified by Patient Access and Scheduling Staff to inform the patient of his/her financial responsibility and set up payment plans when needed.
Responsible to detect, observe and report compliance variances through the chain of command, the Compliance Officer of hospital hotline. Performs any other duties as required or assigned.
Responsibilities of the job include:
- Receives, verifies for completion, and approves financial assistance applications based on internal guidelines and policies.
- Submits required reports to Extended Business Office so that statements can be generated, and accounts worked for payment.
- Reviews accounts returned from Extended Business Office and sends to Outside Collection Agency for pursuit of uncollected balances.
- Creates and maintains a log of all accounts returned from Outside Collection Agency that have been deemed uncollectable and are no longer being worked. Sends Medicare balances to CAH Consultant for Medicare Bad Debt log for Cost Report.
- Process bankruptcy notices and notify collection companies if necessary.
- Swing-bed or skilled nursing benefit eligibility checks.
- Promptly answer incoming calls from patients regarding account balances. Return messages within 2 business days.
- Performs any other duties as required or assigned.
Job Requirements:
- Minimum three (3) years’ experience as a Patient Financial Counselor
- Minimum one (1) year clerical experience, preferably in a hospital setting.
- High school graduate and/or equivalent required.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in business preferred.
- CPC Certification or CPAR Certification Preferred
- Ability to multitask and maintain strong attention in fast-paced environment.
- Strong administrative and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft and data entry systems.
- Knowledge of bankruptcy rules and requirements
- Knowledge of collections rules
