GROUNDS WORKER
DEFINITION
Under supervision, to perform general and varied grounds maintenance work; and to do related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Cuts, edges, trims, and prunes landscaped areas; prepares and fertilizes soil and plants lawns, trees, shrubs, hedges, and flowers; sprays landscaped areas with insecticides and herbicides; cultivates, hoes, weeds, and rakes lawns; sweeps and picks up paper and other debris from walks and driveways, waters various grounds areas by hand or by operating the sprinkler systems; operates a small power sweeper, sweeping parking lots and similar areas according to a prepared schedule; assists in moving and arranging furniture and equipment and tools including edgers and saws; loads trucks with trimmings and trash; hauls sand, dirt, sawdust, and straw and distributes where needed; performs routine work in the preparation, lining, marking, and dragging of athletic fields or related areas; performs general, unskilled duties involved in erecting and repairing fences, mixing, pouring, and finishing cement, and installing athletic equipment; services, cleans and makes minor repairs to equipment used in grounds maintenance work; as a learner operates the more complex power equipment; may perform general custodial duties either seasonally or incidental to grounds keeping duties.
LICENSE REQUIRED
Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver’s License
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Basic methods, materials, and tools used in routine grounds maintenance work; basic safety procedures related to lifting and the use of power equipment.
Ability To:
Use hand and power tools common to grounds keeping work; learn and perform general grounds maintenance work; perform heavy manual labor, lifting in excess of 100 pounds; understand and carry out oral and written directions; work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work; read and write at a level sufficient to read simple work instructions and prepare simple work and time records.
Experience:
None required.

Persons with the knowledge and abilities as stated are considered to have the necessary education.
