Job Summary

El Paso County Parks is seeking a skilled and motivated Park Maintenance Technician III to help maintain and enhance the County's parks, trails, open spaces, and recreational facilities. This hands-on Team Lead role is ideal for an experienced maintenance professional with strong communication skills, a commitment to teamwork, and the ability to lead and support work crews in a variety of outdoor maintenance and construction projects.

The successful candidate will bring experience in equipment operation, irrigation system maintenance and repair, trail maintenance, turf and landscape care, and general park operations. As a Team Lead, the Park Maintenance Technician III coordinates daily crew activities, provides training and guidance to team members, and serves as a positive role model through professionalism, safety awareness, and a strong work ethic. This position plays a key role in preserving the beauty, safety, and functionality of El Paso County's parks and natural resources while delivering exceptional service to residents and visitors.

El Paso County provides Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training for qualified employees.

Hiring Range: $55,000.00 - $63,000 .00 annually

This position has an anticipated work schedule of Tuesday – Friday, 6:00 am -4:30 pm, subject to change.

Under the direction of the District Supervisor, oversees work crew and performs skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled labor tasks associated with park maintenance, operations, and construction programs. Provides a professional example of work standards, ethics, and positive attitude for colleagues. Serves as the Supervisor in their absence, as needed. Employment is subject to the terms, conditions, and policies detailed in the Personnel Policies Manual (PPM). This position requires regular in-person presence as an essential job function.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Coordinates day-to-day activities and provides direction, training, and oversight to crew(s); performs supervisory duties in absence of Supervisor as needed.
  • Completes paperwork and special projects as assigned by the District Supervisor.
  • Performs unskilled, semi-skilled, or skilled labor in any or all the areas of grounds maintenance, facility or equipment maintenance and construction, including turf and irrigation maintenance, horticulture activities, minor construction, facility cleaning, trash collection, and winter snow removal.
  • Performs labor tasks required in the maintenance of park facilities, including the use and operation of specialized vehicles, equipment, and power tools as needed for assigned maintenance and improvement projects.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment and vehicles such as riding mower, skid-steer, backhoe, turf maintenance equipment and dump truck. Performs inspections, routine preventative maintenance, and cleaning of assigned vehicles.
  • Identifies and recommends the need for various minor capital improvements to superiors within assigned areas which may include, but are not limited to, existing and potential safety concerns, turf, horticulture, forestry, irrigation, building and facility maintenance, construction, and other programs. Identifies additional supplies, tools, or materials needed to complete recommended improvements.
  • Drives County vehicles and other equipment to perform assigned duties; operates all County vehicles and equipment per County fleet guidelines.
  • Coordinates the activities of volunteers performing related work, including training and scheduling.
  • Makes recommendations to District Supervisor regarding the performance of employees.
  • Records inventory data and completes weekly safety check lists and work orders.
  • Provides departmental support for special events and other activities.
  • Performs other duties as required.


Supervision Exercised: This classification does not have supervisory authority and requires no supervision or direction of others.

Supervision Received: Receives intermittent supervision. This classification normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. Regular direction, guidance, and coaching from supervisor is expected. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. Performance reviewed periodically.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of horticulture and landscape maintenance techniques, sprinkler systems, and related equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of hand and power tools, painting, plumbing, and minor electrical repairs.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with County staff and the public. Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to effectively oversee the work of subordinates and ensure assignments are completed in a safe, proper, and timely manner.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy labor in all types of weather.
  • Ability to safely operate light and heavy equipment. Must observe and follow safety procedures and precautions.
  • Must possess basic computer skills, including standard applications and Microsoft Office.
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.


Required Education & Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Three years of progressively responsible work experience in grounds maintenance or related field.


Preferred Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent education.
  • Leadership experience.


Licenses/Certificates

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Class A Commercial Driver’s License within six months of employment.


Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.


Work Conditions

Duties are performed both indoors and outside in the field in various weather conditions. Requires physical effort to perform frequent lifting, bending and climbing. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Physical hazards may be present when mixing or working with chemicals, power tools, and motorized equipment. May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Subject to drug and alcohol testing.
