Under supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Youth Mentor (as needed) will provide coverage and facilitate a wide range of creative activities for students within the Afterschool Program. This position will be responsible for coordinating and leading organized sports and enrichment activities during morning/lunch time recess and Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELOP) program hours. The objective of the program is to provide structure and create a fun learning environment where students can expand their interest and build interpersonal skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adhere to all El Concilio California policies and procedures
  • Readily available to provide coverage at all 13 elementary sites within the after school program
  • Create educational and recreational lesson plans to instruct students from grade levels K-8th grade
  • Provide supervision during recess engagement
  • Limit the use of cell phone usage during supervision of students
  • Develop engaging activities where students of all grade levels can participate
  • Adapt sporting activities for the purpose of supporting and/or reinforcing student participation
  • Plan and schedule sports and enrichment activities for morning/lunch recess and ELOP after school programs
  • Maintains physical education equipment (e.g. adapting sporting materials, setting up/taking down game equipment, taking attendance/inventory, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of items
  • Provide supervision to all students at any worksite assigned to.
  • Adhere to District and school site policies/procedures to ensure a safe environment for students
  • Assume responsibility for the safety of students indoors and outdoors
  • Prepare written accident reports as necessary
  • Follow Mandated Reporter protocols based on training when necessary
  • Participate in relevant trainings and collaborative meetings as required
  • Respond to children’s needs, emergencies, and mediate conflicts that may occur during activities
  • Instruct students in the rules and mechanics of sports, games, and teamwork
  • Lead hands on enrichment activities with students in the ELOP/afterschool program
  • Redirect students in a positive manner and provide mentoring support on a daily basis
  • Actively participate in learning activities and provide tutoring based on student needs
  • Provide all students necessary equipment and provide instruction on use of materials for safety purposes
  • Work alongside and collaborate with youth mentors and other specialty staff
  • Assist other Youth Mentors with coverage during site assignment as needed
  • Keep accurate information regarding student attendance and progress during activities
  • Relay any information to Lead Youth Mentors and Program Coordinator regarding program updates
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all students, parents and school personnel
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

  • 18 years of age or valid work permit.
  • Reliable transportation or personal vehicle is highly preferred.
  • Required to travel to all 13 sites as needed.
  • Must be available based on availability provided (work schedule varies upon assigned site)
  • Successful completion of Live scan fingerprint background check
  • Successful completion of a negative Tuberculosis test
  • Maintain acceptable work habits such as attendance, punctuality, time management, team work, etc.

  • Language: Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma/GED equivalency and 48 semester units is highly preferred; or a high school diploma/GED equivalency and completion of Paraprofessional Exam is required in lieu of 48 semester units.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Up to date automobile insurance
  • Successful completion of Sexual Harassment Prevention Training
  • Successful completion of Workplace Violence Prevention Training
  • Successful completion of HIPPA Training
  • Successful completion of Mandated Reporter Training

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high noise level. Primary work environment is an elementary school setting and public venues.  The employee will frequently be required to work outside in moderate weather.
