Job Overview
The Special Education Paraprofessional plays a vital role in supporting students with diverse learning needs within the classroom environment. The paraprofessional will work closely with teachers and other staff to implement lesson plans, assist in behavior management, and provide individualized support to students, particularly those with autism and other special needs.
Duties
- Assist in the implementation of lesson plans tailored for students with special needs.
- Support students in developing literacy skills and other academic competencies.
- Employ effective behavior management techniques to promote a positive learning environment.
- Facilitate communication between students and educators, adapting methods as necessary (including the use of American Sign Language if applicable).
- Help maintain classroom management by ensuring that all students are engaged and supported.
- Collaborate with teachers to assess student progress and adapt instructional strategies as needed.
- Provide one-on-one or small group assistance to students during lessons and activities.
- Participate in training sessions related to special education practices, including Montessori methods if relevant.
Experience
Candidates should possess experience or familiarity with working with individuals on the autism spectrum. Previous experience in a private school setting is preferred but not mandatory. Skills in lesson planning, effective communication, and literacy education are highly valued. Knowledge of behavior management strategies and classroom management techniques will contribute significantly to success in this role. Familiarity with American Sign Language is a plus, enhancing communication with students who may require alternative methods of expression.
