Position Overview
Teach For America is partnering with Education for Change to provide a powerful summer learning experience—and we’re hiring experienced educators as Mentor Teachers. This paid role is ideal for cleared California‑credentialed teachers (preferred) who want to lead a summer classroom as the Teacher of Record while coaching new educators. You’ll ensure student safety, model strong instruction, and guide Corps Members’ daily teaching, helping them build confidence, accelerate their growth, and launch their journey as impactful teachers.
As a Mentor Teacher, you’ll receive ongoing professional development that strengthens your coaching, observation, and feedback skills while growing your leadership. You’ll collaborate with site directors, staff, and fellow MTs; practice giving actionable feedback; analyze teaching through a mission‑aligned lens; and refine your adult‑learning and facilitation skills. You’ll have the opportunity to shape new teachers and advance your own instructional leadership.
Required Qualifications
- Education/Certification: Valid teaching certificate and CPR/First Aid Certification Special
- Experienced or a desire to work in a diverse school district
- Passionate in working with students from underserved communities
- Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills

- Proven track record of effective teaching, strong student outcomes, culturally responsive practice, and strong judgment around instruction, student needs, and safety
- Strong relationship‑building skills and ability to engage students and colleagues
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through reliably (documentation, data trackers, deadlines)
- Highly collaborative, solutions‑oriented mindset when partnering with school staff and TFA teams
- Strong coaching and communication skills—able to give clear, actionable, bite‑sized feedback
- Commitment to creating a positive, inclusive CM experience—where CMs feel seen, supported, and motivated, where relationships with staff are collaborative and joyful, and where the community models the professionalism and care we want CMs to bring into their own classrooms.

Roles and Responsibilities
Classroom & Safety
- Be present in the classroom during all instruction and serve as Teacher of Record; ensure student safety and adherence to IEPs/504s.
- Manage classroom routines and behavior, emergency procedures, and school logistics.
Coaching & Development
- Serve as the primary coach of the Corps Members (~4-6 total) teaching reading and math
- Model strong instruction and culture; provide daily, actionable feedback to Corps Members (CMs).
- Use data to guide CM growth; lead check‑ins, rehearsals, and skill practice.
- Hold pre‑/post‑lesson conversations to improve practice.
- Escalate concerns early and reinforce Pre‑Service focus areas.
Data & Collaboration
- Complete required observations and trackers.
- Collaborate with School Operations Manager (SOM), Leadership Development Coach (LDC), and Managing Director of Leadership Development (MDLD) to align support.
