What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gantry Technician position at Edwards Moving & Rigging, Inc?
HYDRAULIC GANTRY TECHNICIAN
Edwards Moving & Rigging | Nationwide Projects
When the load weighs hundreds of tons and there's no room for error, that's when your experience matters most.
Some people operate equipment.
Others understand what it takes to safely lift, move, and position something that weighs more than most people can imagine.
At Edwards Moving & Rigging, we're looking for experienced Hydraulic Gantry Technicians who know the difference.
If you've worked with hydraulic or electric gantry systems, understand load distribution and synchronized lifting, and know your way around a complex heavy-lift operation, we want to talk with you.
We're not looking for someone who has simply watched a gantry system in action.
We're looking for someone who knows what happens before the lift, during the lift, and what can go wrong if the details aren't right.
What You'll Do
As a Hydraulic Gantry Technician at Edwards, you'll work alongside experienced rigging professionals on some of the most challenging industrial lifting and machinery-moving projects in the country.
You'll:
· Set up, operate, and dismantle hydraulic and electric gantry systems used to lift and position transformers, generators, industrial machinery, and other oversized equipment.
· Assemble and position gantry towers, header beams, lifting attachments, track systems, and associated components.
· Operate or assist with gantry systems according to engineered lift plans, manufacturer specifications, and established safety procedures.
· Monitor hydraulic pressures, lifting heights, load distribution, and equipment performance throughout lifting operations.
· Participate in synchronized lifting, lowering, and positioning using multi-point gantry configurations.
· Perform cribbing, blocking, leveling, and load stabilization.
· Read and interpret rigging plans, engineered lift plans, and equipment specifications.
· Inspect hydraulic cylinders, hoses, pumps, structural components, and rigging equipment.
· Identify hazards and communicate concerns before they become problems.
· Support jack-and-slide operations, machinery moving, and other specialized heavy rigging activities.
· Travel to project locations throughout the United States.
This isn't a job where you simply push a button and watch something go up.
It's a job where your knowledge, preparation, judgment, and attention to detail directly affect the success of the lift.
You Know the Equipment. More Importantly, You Understand the Load.
Anyone who has spent time around hydraulic gantry systems knows that operating the controls is only part of the equation.
You need to understand:
· Load distribution. Where the weight is going and how it affects the lifting configuration.
· Center of gravity. Why understanding the load matters before movement begins.
· Hydraulic systems. What pressures, cylinders, pumps, and equipment performance are telling you.
· Synchronized lifting. Why multiple lifting points must work together.
· Cribbing and stabilization. How to properly support and secure the load throughout the operation.
· Engineered lift plans. How to follow the plan and recognize when actual conditions require attention.
· Communication. Why everyone involved needs to understand what's happening before the load moves.
When you're working with extremely heavy loads, close enough isn't good enough.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for experienced professionals who bring:
· Hands-on experience setting up, operating, or dismantling hydraulic or electric gantry systems.
· Working knowledge of high-capacity lifting equipment and hydraulic/electric systems.
· Experience with load positioning, load stabilization, and proper rigging practices.
· An understanding of load distribution and center-of-gravity considerations.
· The ability to read and follow engineered lift plans and technical instructions.
· Strong equipment inspection and hazard-recognition skills.
· The ability to work effectively as part of an experienced rigging crew.
· A commitment to doing the job safely, even when schedules are demanding.
· A willingness to travel nationwide and work varying schedules based on project requirements.
· The physical ability to perform demanding work in industrial, construction, and outdoor environments.
Even Better If You Have Experience With:
· Enerpac, Lift Systems, or similar hydraulic/electric gantry equipment.
· Four-point gantry configurations and synchronized lifting operations.
· Transformer, generator, or industrial machinery installation.
· Hydraulic jack-and-slide systems.
· Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs).
· Machinery moving, plant relocations, or industrial equipment installation.
· Complex engineered heavy-lift procedures.
· OSHA training or other relevant rigging and safety certifications.
You don't need to have worked with every system or every type of load.
But you do need to understand the fundamentals and know how to apply them when the work gets challenging.
Travel Is Part of the Opportunity
Our projects don't always happen close to home.
And the equipment we move isn't exactly something you can bring into the shop.
That means nationwide travel is part of this position.
You'll work in different industrial environments, encounter different lifting challenges, and have opportunities to put your experience to work on projects across the country.
If you're looking for the same equipment, same location, and same routine every day, this may not be the right fit.
But if you enjoy challenging projects, specialized equipment, and the satisfaction of executing difficult lifts, keep reading.
Why Edwards?
Because if you've spent years developing specialized heavy-lift skills, you should have the opportunity to put them to work.
At Edwards Moving & Rigging, we specialize in heavy lifting, machinery moving, specialized transportation, and complex rigging solutions.
Our crews work on projects that require more than equipment.
They require preparation, experience, teamwork, technical knowledge, and good judgment.
At Edwards, you can expect:
· Serious equipment. Work with hydraulic gantry systems and specialized heavy-lifting equipment.
· Challenging projects. Help lift, move, and position industrial equipment where precision and planning matter.
· Experienced people. Work alongside professionals who understand heavy rigging and the importance of doing things correctly.
· Variety. Different jobsites, equipment configurations, loads, and lifting challenges.
· An opportunity to use your knowledge. Your technical experience and field judgment matter here.
· A team approach. Successful heavy lifts require communication, coordination, and trust.
· Work worth being proud of. When the lift is complete, you'll know you helped accomplish something extraordinary.
We Know There's More to a Gantry Lift Than Making the Load Go Up.
You know it too.
You understand why the setup matters.
Why the cribbing matters.
Why hydraulic pressures matter.
Why load distribution matters.
Why the lift plan matters.
And why the people working alongside you need to know they can trust you.
That's the kind of experience we're looking for.
If you're an experienced Hydraulic Gantry Technician who takes pride in the trade, respects the equipment, understands the science behind the lift, and wants to be part of a team that moves some of the heaviest equipment in the country, we'd like to hear from you.
Big loads. Precise lifts. Skilled people.
Bring your experience. Let's move something extraordinary.
