SUMMARY: 

 

Provides leadership and coordination to ensure an aligned and articulated counseling program.  Serves as a resource to counselors. Collaborates with school faculty, staff, students, parents, and the community to ensure a systematic PK-12 school counseling program that promotes academic excellence, fosters a safe environment, inspires personal growth, and empowers students to graduate college and career ready. 

 

This position requires knowledge of the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programming.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

 

Counseling & Guidance Program Management 

 

  • Assist in overseeing the development and implementation of a balanced, comprehensive, developmental counseling program that is consistent with district goals and objectives and includes guidance curriculum and responsive services, individual planning and system support.  
  • Assist in the evaluation of the effectiveness of the school counseling program and recommend revisions, including improvement to district-wide assessments. 
  • Assist in designing, planning, and implementing districtwide guidance lessons in the areas of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, responsible decision-making, and personal well-being. 
  • Assist with training, resources, and programming in the following: 
  • Mental health promotion, early mental health prevention, and intervention. 
  • Substance abuse prevention and intervention. 
  • Suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. 
  • Grief-informed and trauma-informed practices. 
  • Safe, supportive school climate. 
  • Child/sexual abuse prevention and intervention, including human trafficking. 
  • Bullying/cyber-bullying prevention and conflict resolution. 
  • Violence prevention and intervention, including stay-away agreements and threat assessments. 
  • Assist with campus crisis and interventions. 
  • Assist with onboarding, professional development, and continual support for school counselors, intervention counselors, and district social workers. 
  • Visits schools and observes on a regular basis to ensure consistency of implementation of the school counseling program. 
  • Promote and implement district and site-based approaches to increase family access and engagement through school counseling. 
  • Assists the Human Resources Department and Principals with interviewing and recommending qualified candidates for elementary school counseling positions.    
  • Assists in developing and conducting professional development for staff.    
  • Promote supportive and culturally responsive school counseling programs that foster academic achievement for all students. 
  • Coordinate school, home, and community resources to enable students, parents, and others to be referred to special programs and services as needed.  

 

Professional Development 

 

  • Provide professional development to teachers, campus counselors and administrators to assist in intervention strategies and techniques for use with identified students. 
  • Consult with teachers, parents, campus counselors, and administrators to assist in intervention strategies and techniques for use with identified students. 
  • Assist school staff members with knowledge and implementation of intervention strategies and techniques regarding instruction and discipline to encourage school success among identified students. 
  • Share preventive strategies to remove behaviors that hinder academic success. 
  • Pursue Professional Development activities for self and assigned staff; ensure that Professional Development activities are aligned with District goals and initiatives and current professional research. 

 

 

 

 

Policy, Reports, and Law 

 

  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and Board Policy.  Comply with all District and campus routines and regulations. 
  • Adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards for school counselors, including current professional standards of competence and practice. 
  • Model an effective referral process for assisting identified students and others to use special programs and services. 
  • Maintain and submit accurate, timely documentation of program and service activities including monthly reports, surveys, needs assessments, action plans, and other required documentation for program efficacy data.  
  • Maintain confidentiality. 
  • Develop and maintain systems for retrieval of information in support of all programs; compile, maintain, file, and secure all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents. 
  • Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives. 
  • Comply with the Professional Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators. 
  • Follow District safety protocols and emergency procedures. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 

Education/Certification: 

 

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling from an accredited college or university 
  • Valid Texas School Counselor Certificate  

 

Experience: 

 

  • Three (3) years’ experience in providing responsive counseling services to children or adolescents. 
  • Two (2) years successful educational experiences. 
  • Elementary counseling experience (preferred)

  • Knowledge of academic programs, policies and procedures

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills 
  • Skill in conducting team efforts to design, implement, measure and refine programs and services 
  • Skill in communicating effectively with parents, students, staff, and community.   
  • Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and district staff 
  • Skill in analyzing complex information 
  • Skill in making oral and written presentations 
  • Skill in demonstrating a working knowledge of strategies for transforming behaviors, beliefs, and habits for students who are at risk of not graduating from high school 
  • Ability to identify, access, and utilize the multiplicity of social services available in the community to support students. 
  • Knowledge of community-based organizations to help students’ access appropriate services outside the school setting. 
  • Strong organizational, communication, teambuilding, and interpersonal skills
