What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Design Engineer position at Edison Smart®?
Contractor Mechanical Design Project Engineer
Tasks will include, but are not limited to:
- Translate customer drawings and specifications into a fully functional mechanical system
- Optimise system functionality from as-sold concept into workable mechanical design within budget, in coordination with Electrical, Controls, Supply Chain, and Installation teams
- 3D modelling of systems and clash detection management
- Production of 2D customer approval drawings and installation layout drawings
- Perform spatial analysis for clearance envelopes, egress routes, and forklift/vehicle aisle planning
- Perform system and component-level calculations (throughput, motor power, belt pull, structural loads, etc.)
- Apply relevant safety regulations and ergonomic principles
- Specify mechanical equipment, including both OEM-manufactured and third-party components
- Produce motor manifests aligned with electrical and controls engineering requirements
- Document engineering decisions, installation instructions, and design outputs for site supervisors and installation subcontractors
- Manage project documentation within a controlled, rights-based document management system
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology
- Minimum 3 years of relevant experience (or Associate degree 5 years experience)
- Preferably experience within the material handling / warehouse automation industry
- Proficiency in AutoCAD 2D & 3D
- Experience with Autodesk tools (Revit, Navisworks, Vault, etc.)
- Ability to work with proprietary AutoCAD-based engineering tools (training provided where required)
- Strong team mindset with ownership of deliverables
- Ability to prioritise workload effectively in a project environment
- Strong problem-solving and analytical ability
- Ability to assess situations quickly and take appropriate action
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
