Description Of Job

As a member of the Office of Academic Advising staff, the Academic Advisor is responsible for ongoing relationships with approximately 175-225 assigned students. The Academic Advisor will assist students in working towards academic and career success by providing information and opportunities for growth in the areas of academic advising, career development, and academic skills acquisition. The Advisor will serve as the primary student contact, supporting students holistically and/or providing appropriate referrals to resources, if/when necessary. Additionally, the Academic Advisor may act as a liaison to specific School(s) and/or other designated academic departments within Edgewood University to develop a deeper knowledge base, provide a resource, and foster communication between the departments and Academic Advising.

Responsibilities

Academic Advising:

  • Provide students with curricular information, program and graduation requirements, and academic policies and procedures.
  • Help students discern short-term course planning and facilitate course registration.
  • Assist students with long-term planning for timely degree completion.
  • Provide academic advising support for incoming first-year and transfer student advising sessions.

Career Discernment

  • Provide individualized counseling for career discernment/major selection and support exploration of career/major changes, as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Career Development and faculty to help students contextualize decision-making.

Academic Success Strategies

  • Provide individualized assistance with issues concerning academic success including study skills, time management, and test taking skills.
  • Meet with and support assigned students who are placed on academic warning and probation, utilizing research-based academic success strategies.
  • Follow up on all academic alert notifications for assigned students with academic concerns.
  • When necessary, support students in the course withdrawal process.

Professional Development

  • Participate in continuous professional development.
  • Attend Office of Academic Advising staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Develop academic, career, and learning support knowledge base for specific designated academic departments.

General

  • Keep accurate records of student contacts and notes. This includes email and individual appointments, as well as other interactions and/or transactions with students.
  • Implement and follow-through on retention initiatives as directed.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to campus resources when necessary.
  • Act as a resource for designated academic departments. This may include attending department meetings, meeting with faculty, meeting with students, collaborating with external partners, and/or observing classes.
  • Collaborate with deans, directors, coordinators, faculty and staff to evaluate the needs of students, and address both individual student concerns as well as facilitate student navigation of academic processes.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Success or their designee.

Job Qualifications

Necessary Education or Work Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in higher education, student personnel, or educational leadership and policy analysis desirable.
  • One year of previous academic advising, career counseling, or relevant experience strongly preferred.

Required Knowledge And Skills

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication, and relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills as well as attentiveness to detail and accuracy.
  • Familiarity with research and theory in student development, career services, academic advising or learning support desired.
  • Experience working with and supporting the development and success of diverse college student populations.

Specialized Technology Skills

  • Demonstrated ability and affinity to effectively use technology to enhance communication and record-keeping is required.
