BEHAVIOR LIAISON SPECIALIST
JOB DESCRIPTION

Reports to: Exceptional Children’s Program Director
FLSA Status: Exempt
Supervises: N/A
Work Week Schedule: Monday - Friday; Some evenings as needed
Work Hours: 40
Months per year: 10
PURPOSE:
The Behavior Liaison Specialist will coordinate and provide specialized support to students identified by the initial grant application working collaboratively with those students, their families, and school staff with a focus of prevention and safe, positive intervention. The Behavior Liaison Specialist will have the knowledge and skills necessary to assist students and staff with the application of positive behavior supports that address students’ inappropriate behaviors and provide a means to help the students become more academically successful. These supports include, but are not limited to, conducting functional behavior assessments (FBA), leading the development of behavior intervention plans (BIP) and assisting in the implementation of those plans, modeling best practices, providing side-by-side coaching to students and staff, collecting and analyzing behavioral data, linking students and families to community resources. The person selected for this position will be expected to provide periodic professional development to Edenton-Chowan Schools staff on topics such as crisis prevention strategies, and the development of effective research-based FBA/BIPs.

2. Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when student is participating in an inclusive activity
3. Ability to build positive rapport and motivate students to participate in the school community and achieve academic success.
4. Strong interpersonal skills with staff, students, and family members
5. Ability to communicate effectively and de-escalate complex situations
6. Ability to complete required documentation and reports in a timely manner, demonstrate high quality writing skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution in mental health, psychology, or other related area
2. Experience in working with children and/or adolescents with disabilities.
3. Strong working knowledge of current research-based approaches and methods of behavioral intervention strategies and methods used in educational settings.
4. Obtaining CPR/First-Aid certification and Crisis Prevention Intervention certification will be required within the first 10 months of employment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists identified students with alternative ways of communicating and replacing inappropriate behavior
responses with more positive strategies.
2. Implements and models social skill development techniques, including social stories, peer facilitation and
peer training for the purpose of assisting in achieving academic, social, emotional and behavioral goals.
3. Participates in the development and Implementation of behavioral plans designed by the IEP team
4. Monitors identified students and records observational and direct service data for both academics and
behavior support provided
5. Assists with the development of behavioral plans, programs, assessments, and analysis of data that will
promote positive classroom experiences for grant-identified students
6. Serve as an IEP team member for identified students
7. Make recommendations for changes to behavior intervention plans, IEPs or classroom behavior
management practices based on data collection
8. Work with each identified students’ school team to establish cooperative and harmonious relations in
student-to-student and student-to-teacher relationships
9. Educate school staff on the specific disabilities of the identified students, the symptoms of those
disabilities, and provide staff with the tools needed to assist in building self-regulation skills in those
students
10. Provide support to teachers through observations and coaching sessions for the development of adaptive
skills and replacement of undesirable student behavior
11. Must be willing to work with students who have been identified as having an Emotional Disability.
12. Assist teachers with identifying trends of behaviors that negatively impact classroom instruction
13. Assist teachers with completing self-assessments related to classroom management effectiveness
14. Build collaborations between school staff, community-based mental health agencies, and parents to
create a common wrap-around service and implementation of self-regulation skills being taught to the
student
15. Perform other duties as assigned by the EC Director
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands/ Work Environment-
  • Inside with some occasional outside environments
  • Direct contact with staff, students, and parents
  • Regularly required to stand; walk
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Implementation of CPI techniques to support positive student behavior
  • May encounter stressful situations where a professional attitude will be required.
  • Multi-tasking is essential as deadlines and frequent interruptions are common.
